NASA ends Phoenix Mars mission after dust storm silence
NASA declared end of the Phoenix mission five months after the May landing in Mars arctic plains. Ground controllers, unable to hear from the lander for over a week, halted operations as solar panels blocked by a dust storm reduced sunlight. The $475 million mission had confirmed ice at the landing site and melting soil to taste water, despite early instrument troubles.

Diocese to pay 5 million to abuse victims settles case
Patrick O Donnell faced a civil trial over decades of molestation allegations in Spokane diocese. A lawyer for about two dozen victims said the settlement aims to hold him accountable, though the priest has no funds to satisfy the award and documents are not released. O Donnell admitted to abusing dozens of teenage boys in depositions but did not testify in court. He was named in 66 of 176 claims against the diocese, more than any other priest.

Death toll climbs after Haitian school collapse
Rescue teams from the United States France and Haiti used sonar cameras and dogs to search a collapsed Haitian school three days after the incident. The death toll reached 94 with 150 injured as search efforts intensified and survivors became unlikely. Capt. Michael Istvan of Fairfax County Virginia said chances of finding more survivors were remote. Several bodies were recovered and radar indicated more victims, though no survivors were found since Saturday morning. Daniel Vigee of a Martinique rescue team stated no survivors were evident.
