Dr. Ramond Schwegler of Kansas University said a suspected food poisoning at the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity affected about 40 members at 1220 West Street. Fraternity members were treated at Watkins Hospital and none were hospitalized. He called the outbreak a nuisance illness with abdominal pain and nausea, noting possible chicken from Wednesday night dinner as the culprit.
Missouri State Rep. Robert Young told the Western Arkansas Development Association he is confident a toll road will be built south from Kansas City and that a turnpike to the Arkansas line would top Missouri priorities. Earl Jones of Texarkana noted a western route would not jeopardize other turnpikes, with a traffic study due December 15 and public in February. Jeta Taylor warned rivals in other Arkansas regions push for nonwestern routes.
The 1967 Haskell Institute Homecoming Queen will be crowned tonight during the Homecoming Dance. Candidates include Verna Alhaitty Judy Ybarra and Janice Smith. the queen's name will be announced tonight. The homecoming football game follows at 2 pm as Haskell hosts Arkansas City Junior College.
Three vehicles collided on K-10 ten miles east of Eudora. David I. Newman 19 and Michael E. Page 19 of Kansas City Missouri were treated for minor cuts and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Diane J. Hartman 21 of Spring Hill suffered a possible concussion. Total damage exceeded 3500 with 2500 to Newman’s 1967 car, 1000 to Haas’s 1955 sports car, and full loss to Hartman’s 1956 vehicle. Officers noted conflicting accounts and two hits per car near Captain Creek Bridge.
Charles V. Blackmon a 24 year old Wichita State University student was arrested at his home and brought before a U S commissioner on a charge of threatening the life of the President His bond was set at 25000 and he was moved to Sedgwick County jail The event followed a Friday incident as President Johnson planned a Wichita visit on a cross country tour of service bases The police and federal officials offered few details and an attorney entered the proceedings on Blackmon s behalf
Former Lawrence city council member and mayor William J. Turner 67 died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka after ill health. Funeral set for Tuesday at First Christian Church with Masonic graveside rites at Memorial Park Cemetery. Turner survived by wife Margaret and three daughters, a son, sisters, and 12 grandchildren. He was born March 4 1900 in Caldwell Kansas and was a 33rd Degree Mason honored in 1965. He served as councilman and mayor during the late 1940s and early 1950s and once called for the resignations of police chief Dixie Moore and fire chief Paul Ingels.
In Dak To and surrounding areas in the central highlands, U S forces report heavy fighting with 18 Americans killed and 96 paratroopers wounded. North Vietnamese units suffer high casualties, while other actions include ambushed convoys and air strikes near Haiphong and Hanoi amid monsoon conditions.
Twelve Douglas County officials will join about 1,200 county leaders at the 51st Kansas Official Council meeting in Wichita. Gov. Docking will open the session with a keynote by Robert Steadman on local government modernization. County officials will be recognized for 10 and 25 years of service, with speeches by notable figures on juvenile delinquency, prison reform, and rehabilitation.
Portland Oregon AP reports the Rev J Whitcomb Brougher Sr aged 97 died Friday. He helped organize the American Baptist Convention as one of about 15 founders.
Herman Ziesch a 47 year old resident of Baldwin was injured when his tractor and trailer overturned off the road on Douglas County Lake Road while southbound toward Baldwin. He was thrown from the tractor and taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital then to Kansas University Medical Center with internal back and shoulder injuries. The crash occurred about 6 p m as the machine and trailer left the shoulder and plunged into a ditch. The tractor was demolished.
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor arrived in New York from Rome on a sudden trip. They planned to visit with Burton's daughter Kate, 11, and then proceed to California to see Taylor's parents.
Lawrence High School hosts a joint Y-Teen Hi-Y party for members at 8 tonight in the school gym with a barn atmosphere using hay stacks. Casual dress, dancing and volleyball planned among attendees.
