KUY and Watson Library organize a week long drive to collect several thousand American books for Asia Foundation supported students and universities in Asia. Donors may leave books at Watson Library desks or departmental libraries. the effort follows a 1958 drive that yielded 383 books.

State Department to Dismiss About 500 Workers
About 500 State Department employees will receive dismissal notices between Nov 15 and Dec 1 due to a $10 million shortfall in salaries. A 1928 1932 Haskell football quarterback he has served in Indian education roles across Sapulpa Tahlequah Fort Wingate and Concho. Students Float Rafting to KU KU State Game in Lawrence
Three Kansas State University students were seen rafting down the Kaw River toward Lawrence to attend the Kansas University versus Kansas State football game. The sighting occurred near Lecompton with expected arrival around 1 p.m. News notes report homecoming decorations at KU-LS campus shrinking as time demands grow. An electrical outage hit Lawrence areas early this morning, traced to a faulty underground cable, with service restored by 7:32 a.m. The Richland area displayed the state flag first, while India School reported flying the flag for about five weeks.

Pair Given Sentences For Jailbreak and Robbery
William E. Johnson 23 of Lawrence Kansas and William D. Osborne 23 of Long Beach California pleaded guilty in district court Friday to jailbreak and first degree robbery and were given 10 to 20 year prison terms. Johnson Osborne and Claude W. Cooper 21 of Kansas City overpowered a jailer and escaped from Wyandotte County jail Oct 26. They were captured the same day west of Lawrence.

Buckman Publishes Lagerkvist Translation Study in Tulane Review
Buckman, KU Library Director and Scandinavian lecturer, approved translations of Par Lagerkvist works for The Tulane Drama Review November issue. Lagerkvist, Nobel laureate in 1950, approved the English version without changes. Buckman’s section covers 87 of 157 pages. The issue also includes analysis on iron in ancient bricks suggesting a two thirds drop in Earth magnetism over 2000 years.

Noted Kansas Oilman William Dalton Is Dead
William B. Dalton, 85, Kansas oilman of the year in 1960, died Friday night at his Topeka home. He served as state senator for Nemaha Pottawatomie in the 1920s, was state grain inspector 1925–26, and sat on the Kansas Public Service Commission 1927–28. Dalton owned Kansas Oil Co, a grain elevator, oil ventures and farms in St George, and bulk oil plants at Wamego and Onaga.
