Marshall outlines Germany recovery amid Western aid debate
Secretary of State Marshall told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Germany’s economy must be rebuilt to allow self support and Europe’s recovery. He warned of propaganda fears but expressed confidence in a U S plan to unite eastern and western Europe after 1951 with a total foreign aid by mid 1948 of about 2.607 billion including 1.5 billion for long range recovery and 597 million for immediate stopgap aid. He noted allocations for occupation costs and aid to China, France, Italy, Austria, Korea and Japan.
