Cape Canaveral AP reports a tiny monkey named Goliath died when an Atlas missile carrying the animal exploded aloft. The 14 pound rhesus monkey had no escape, officials say, as the flight veered nose down and a fireball formed several hundred feet wide.
Lawrence gasoline prices returned to normal Thursday at all city stations after a three stage price drop since May 1. Regular fell from 27.9 to 25.9, then to 22.9 and finally 21.9, with premiums rising to 29.9 and 35.9 at major distributors.
Game officials predict record pheasant numbers this year as hunters pour in from Texas, Oklahoma, and nearby states. Eddie Bond estimates about a quarter of a million openers will seek birds. The season runs to December 17 with daily shooting from dawn to sunset, a five bird daily bag limit and a 10 bird possession limit, allowed hens only in limited fashion to curb waste.
Young Canada geese feed on grains marine plants and insects. They double their weight in a week and reach full maturity in six weeks.
Lawrence Downtown Quarterback Club members sell Heard in Lawrence Special KU ties to raise funds for KU football banquet on December 5 at the KU Union Building. The ties honor coach Jack Mitchell who wore one against Iowa State, the first KU win of the season.
The Alumnivisory Board praised higher education as critical for freedom amid Communist pressure. Parker noted infiltration fears in Latin America Africa and the Middle East and urged gift support for teaching and research. Irvin Youngberg said gifts funded 90 percent of KU land and half of major buildings. Last year 10 642 donors supported KU, ranking top 10 among state universities. Dale W Maxwell noted thousands of small gifts averaging 32 dollars totaling over 340 000, equivalent to a 7 million endowment at 5 percent.
Dr. George Jackson, state director of institutions, vows to fight for restoring 184 authorized positions in the state hospital system. He cites budget hearings where requests for the next year were cut, mostly reducing nurses and aides, and notes not all cuts are staffed currently.
Tarkio beauty Scamman, a Delta Delta Delta and Miss Scam-man, will crown this year’s queen with attendants Wally Heyde and Leslie Gail Coover. A past queen, Mrs. Gerald R. Waugh, will attend. After the game, Auntie Mame shows at 9 and a dance from 9 to 1 in the Kansas Union with two bands, Ralph Marterie and George Wynn. Closing hours extend to 1 30 a.m. Sunday.
More than 2,300 people attended the telephone office open house on Wednesday and Thursday. John Drake, manager, said the event drew enthusiastic response. Highlights included the Bell solar battery direct distance dialing and voice recording displays. The count includes 100 employee guests and fifth and sixth graders from city schools who toured in class groups.
Dorsey Liberty Post No 14 of the American Legion begins steps toward purchasing land and building a post home. Commander Bill Boswell notes a committee will arrange site purchase and construction plans. No completion dates yet. Committee members include Howard Hurwitz Forrest C Allen Eugene Riling Harold Volk and Lindley Brien.
Aerial observers reported a fleet of 50 plus Soviet trawlers and two mother ships patrolling Georges Bank about 50 miles from Hyannis Port. The ships formed several groups, some flew red flags, yet appeared to fish little, with observers noting calm crews and a woman among them. Located roughly 20 miles from Chatham, this fleet posed no apparent military display.
A University of Minnesota scientist and four U.S. Navy sailors died when a Navy P2V7A Neptune crashed on takeoff from Wilkes Station in Antarctica after a magnetic mapping flight. The party had left McMurdo Sound for a return leg via Mirny Soviet base. four others were injured. Names and hometowns of the fallen were listed, with additional details on the crash and its unfolding immediate aftermath.
Two meetings for newspaper men are set for Saturday at Kansas University. About 30 editors from eastern Kansas districts will elect officers and discuss mutual issues in Flint Hall morning sessions, then attend the KU Kansas State Homecoming game in the afternoon. About 25 circulation managers from six states will attend a Circulation Managers School Saturday and Sunday in nearby events with speakers from the Arkansas Gazette and Denver Post.
Three women Mary Zeller and Marie Zeller of Paxico and Marilyn Woldt of McFarland escaped injury when a six point buck weighing about 250 pounds crashed into their car on Interstate 70 west of Topeka. The impact caused an estimated 500 dollars in damage to the vehicle.
Jim Clark Motors of Lawrence won a 1962 state patrol contract to supply 60 to 90 Dodge Dart patrol cars at 2128 dollars each, excluding taxes. The firm, a former Kansas Highway Patrol supplier in 1958 1959 and 1960, employs 20 people at 623 Mass. St. Clark expects substantial income for Lawrence.
The 1961 Lawrence United Fund Campaign exceeded its $58,000 quota by early afternoon and was nearing $60,500 by noon Saturday. Drive chair Austin Stedham called off another emergency meeting as the target topped, marking the earliest completion in six years. surplus will lower next year’s quota.
At Richmond Byrd Field a Imperial Air Lines Constellation lost two engines and had power loss on a third before an emergency landing failed. The aircraft crashed in a wooded area two miles from the runway killing 77 people. Survivors Ronald H. Conway and flight engineer William Poythress described the scene.
Kansas University's Center for Research in Engineering Science will have its official opening at 9 a.m. Saturday with invitation only gathering and luncheon. A public open house may follow. The $225,000 center sits west of Town Street between 15th and 19th Streets and has operated partially since early this year. Speakers include James A. McCain of Kansas State University and Prof. C. S. Yih of Michigan University, plus four faculty members who will discuss Engineering School Programs: Fred Kurata, Ross E. McKinney, Norris S. Nahman, and David W. Appel.
