The West Lawrence dispute pits Rose and neighborhood ally against Mayor Argersinger as they press for a downzoning plan to protect landowners. Commissioners vote 4 to 1 to study the issue, with planning staff to decide next steps at Wednesday meeting.
The Associated Press reports Johnson County rejects a half cent sales increase. Overland Park voters oppose the measure by a ten to one margin, with 18 325 against and 8 332 for county wide. Overland Park numbers 10 069 no to 646 yes. Mayor Ben M Sykes leads the opposition and Prairie Village Mayor William E Franklin backs the hike.
A land use expert warned use value assessment would boost homeowner taxes by as much as 85 percent after a general reappraisal while utility and cropland taxes shift. State aid to rural districts would rise or fall based on how use value is phased in, with Lawrence district expecting 2.7 million in state aid this year.

The Legislative Educational Planning Commission presents a Kansas university enrollment study showing Kansas University has the highest head count and full-time equivalents, the most credit hours, and the lowest student-faculty ratio. KU's Lawrence campus grew from 18 518 to 23 446, while KSU rose to 19 045. Emporia and Pittsburg declined.
