Weighting GPA debate spans Lawrence and Shawnee Mission
Lawrence and Shawnee Mission districts weigh the value of weighted GPAs for AP and honors courses. Shawnee Mission adopted weighting in the 1980s to reward advanced work and boost college readiness, while Lawrence considers whether to implement a similar system. Critics say nonweighted GPAs may hinder National Merit chances, though admissions leaders note overall suitability matters more than GPA alone.
