Manmade structures aid chimney swifts in nesting and flight
Richard Johnston notes chimney swifts rely on vertical walls for nesting while remaining aerial feeders. They roost in communal chimney sites, exhibit cooperative breeding, and benefit from human structures shaping their distribution across eastern North America. Johnston, KU emeritus, highlights species adaptability and broader ecological shifts due to humans.

Orchard life in fall offers real apples and history
In a Washington Post excerpt, Apple grower Frank Browning explores why apple orchards captivate amid modern tech. He contrasts old family orchards in Kentucky with advances like dwarf trees and bioengineering, noting shifts to Integrated Pest Management and heirloom varieties such as Newtown Pippin Stayman Winesap and Mother. He blends reportage with affection for tangible, human-scale farming.
