Anderson Orders Prison Clampdown To Halt Escapes

Gov. John Anderson told state prison officials to stop a rash of escapes in the last month. He met with Robert Kaiser and wardens from Lansing and Hutchinson reformatories. He noted trusties caused most escapes and said no drastic system changes are planned.

Santa Fe Seeks Abandonment of Lawrence Area Rail Line

Santa Fe Railway officials told the Journal-World they will file a government request to abandon 23.1 miles of track from three miles south of Lawrence through Vinland and Baldwin to Ottawa Junction citing declining business. No locomotive has run between Baldwin and Ottawa for five years and carload shipments fell 43 percent from 1960 to 1961. Shippers in Baldwin were notified of the proposal. Lawrence to Baldwin freight has operated on demand for five years. The line was built 1866-67 by the Leavenworth, Lawrence & Galveston Railroad, originally Leavenworth, Lawrence & Fort Gibson Railroad, formed in 1858.
