Earle Martin 62 of Hutchinson a former Lawrence resident died Monday in a Hutchinson hospital. Born June 19 1898 in Atlanta Kansas he lived in Lawrence 20 years then moved to Hutchinson where he had been a resident 30 years. Funeral services 10:30 p m Wednesday at Johnson and Sons chapel Hutchinson with Rev Arion E Bright officiating burial in a Winfield cemetery. Martin was a tailor and a member of the Elks and American Legion and served in World Wars I and II. He is survived by his mother Mrs Viola Martin of Hutchinson.

More than 100 Rotary members and guests toured the Cooperative Farm Chemical Association plant east of Lawrence. R. R. Zurbuchen led visits through the gas generating area, compression building, air plant, cooling towers, pump house, refrigeration, steam and nitric acid plants, the 200-foot prilling tower, and the three acre warehouse. The facility shipped a record 900 railroad cars and 1,000+ trucks in April, with 200,000 tons of fertilizer expected this year. Plant uses 5,400 tons of air daily, 75 million gallons of cooling water, and 17 million cubic feet of natural gas daily. operating temps range from 330 degrees below zero to 2,750 degrees Fahrenheit. About 280 workers employed, rising toward 300 with future expansion.

Kansan Ballots May Be Voided Over Write-In Electors
In Kansas a surge of write-in presidential elector names could invalidate many ballots. Attorney General John Anderson Jr ordered county attorneys to review all ballots held for possible disqualification. In Johnson County Olathe a precinct reported 23 of 160 ballots disqualified for writing electors’ names in addition to presidential votes. County Attorney John J. Gardner said ballots may fail due to form and missing instructions. Voter warnings and party guidance were issued to avoid write-ins.

Vice President Richard Nixon and his wife voted at a Whittier polling place set in the McNey home. Nixon arrived early after little sleep, greeted by about 200 onlookers, and turned in two absentee ballots. He remarked about voting again and noted the local swing in his favor. Capsule Launch Ends With Booster Failure Over Atlantic
A Mercury capsule launched from Wallops Island Virginia failed to detach from its booster. The unmanned one ton craft reached 53000 feet before the separation mechanism failed and the capsule and spent booster sank 13 miles offshore. The test followed another setback at Cape Canaveral where a Blue burned out early. The Wallops flight aimed to validate a vehicle for manned orbital flight next year.

Charles Trout Requires Emergency Treatment After Brawl
A 23 year old Lawrence man, Charles Trout of 1111 Ky St He, received emergency care at Lawrence Memorial Hospital Monday night after a fight that involved more than 10 people including three women. Trout, who suffered head and facial wounds needing over 10 stitches, said he was struck by a beer can. Dennis Schmidt, 19, of Kansas City Kan, was also taken into custody for parole violation. Undersheriff Leon Roberts and Deputy John Wolfe said additional charges from the melee may follow.
