A grass fire in Haskell spread across more than ten acres and threatened W. C. Simons home at 2500 Vermont before being stopped by the fire department and about 25 Haskell students using wet sacks. A southeast wind pushed the flames from an old flower bed burn-off behind a building.

One Killed in Clash at Muhlenberg Coal Mine
In Muhlenberg County Kentucky a clash at a new coal mine 15 miles west of Greenville left construction superintendent Robert Brown dead and Brent Hart, president of the Harri Coal company, wounded in the left side. About 250 to 300 armed men reportedly seized the mine property and remained in control hours after the incident. The mine, not yet producing coal, had 25 men outside and others inside the shaft preparing to start operations. The coal would be transported to the company’s facility at White City, two and a half miles away in Hopkins County.
