Kansas University anthropologists examine a near intact female skeleton found near a creek bank with a dated pottery fragment possibly from A D 500 to 1000. Scientists expect carbon dating on nearby charcoal while the bones stay at KU's Museum of Anthropology.
County and city leaders show hesitancy to repeal the intangibles tax. Beverly Bradley is the only Douglas County commissioner in favor but requires an alternative revenue source. Colleagues Neis and Whitenight oppose lifting the tax for now.
An anonymous $300,000 gift funds Baker University to establish the Er nestine Susannah Buckley Chair in American History. Jerald Walker notes the chair will support teacher scholars while $50,000 more endows the library.
Ten people were shot in the French Quarter and nearby areas in New Orleans within an hour. A suspect was taken into custody outside the Merrill Lynch office. no deaths reported though several victims were seriously wounded. Charity Hospital issued an urgent blood plea.
During the KU KSU game at Memorial Stadium a Kansas State bench area football was tossed into the west stands by Mike Rainsberger son of Ellis Rainsberger. A Kansas State supporter attempted to recover it as police were summoned. The ball was returned and the boy headed to the Wildcats locker room after the game.
Juanita Wilson of Topeka won first prize a 15 pound turkey for predicting Kansas Kansas State score 29 21 KU. Leroy Trout of Eudora and Rex Guenther Lawrence won two 10 pound runner up turkeys. Winners will be notified by mail to claim prizes.
Douglas County officials begin work to computerize county bookkeeping to reduce manual input across the clerk, treasurer, budget office and related departments. The plan includes numbering accounts for computer use and aims for full implementation by Fiscal Year 1979 with schooling for staff.
Old West Lawrence Assn asks city commissioners to rezone 18 lots from C-5 to RS-2 north of Ninth Street between Mississippi and Kentucky. The group argues current commercial deep zoning causes instability and harms housing, and asks action Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the First National Bank Tower.
Raybert Thornton of Route 3 Lawrence was elected president of the Lawrence Shrine Club at the regular monthly meeting. He will assume office January 1 and serves as manager of World Company Printing Service with farming and ranching interests in Jefferson County. Other officers elected: Carl Rasmussen first vice president Frank Spencer second vice president and Norman Lomax secretary treasurer.
Loren L. Lockhart son of Mr and Mrs David E Lockhart of McLouth Kansas has reported for duty aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Halsey homeported in Long Beach California.
