Soviet Warning Says U S Testing Could Provoke Prolonged Program

The Tass statement warns that continued U S and allied nuclear tests may compel the Soviet Union to extend its own testing program. It condemns Kennedy's pledge to resume atmospheric tests and calls for a general disarmament treaty with strict international control. Warmer Weather Expected In Lawrence Tuesday

Crisp but warmer weather is forecast for Lawrence on Tuesday with temperatures climbing into the 50s after an overnight low in the upper 20s. Sunday was bright but only mid 40s, with a 30 degree overnight low. The Weather Bureau says similar fair conditions will extend statewide.

KU Freshman football player dies after emergency surgery

John Pippin an 18 year old Kansas University freshman from Oklahoma City died at 1 10 am in Watkins Memorial Hospital from complications after an emergency appendectomy on Oct 28 He was a 185 pound halfback and Sigma Chi pledge His death follows a period of treatment and additional surgery last Thursday The university officials called the death a tragedy and noted his happiness and adaptability He leaves parents a sister and a brother with funeral plans set for Oklahoma City and Edmond Okla.

UF Deadline Extended to Friday in Lawrence Fund Campaign

The Lawrence United Fund drive extended to noon Friday after a 2 p.m. tally showed $6,500 short of the $58,000 quota. Leaders Payne Stedham Trackston urged workers to cover deficient canvass areas and report issues to UF headquarters to reach the goal.

Sheldon Carey Wins a Turkey Contest Title at KU

KU design professor J Sheldon Carey of 2122 Owens Lane won last week's Journal World football contest earning a 15 pound dressed turkey. He missed only three games and correctly predicted KU Nebraska 27 13. Second place went to Mrs Melissa Yazzie Aurora Colorado and Ellen Gentry Lawrence Kansas both winning 10 pound turkeys after missing four games.

Will Hess Wins AP News Photo Contest Honor

Will Hess head of the Journal World photo department won a first place and received an honorable mention in the Missouri Kansas Associated Press Newsphoto Contest. Seventy four photographers from 30 newspapers entered more than 400 pictures. Hess's first place was in the feature category for Ballerina and Pupil, Class B Division papers under 50,000 daily circulation.
