The Allies released the Italian armistice terms in Washington London and Rome revealing a harsh lasting surrender framework but noting many provisions weren't invoked and others modified over time. Officials cited propaganda fears and timed publication after foreign ministers talks in London.
A fire at Ottawa University last night damaged the gymnasium with a boiler room explosion. Half the building burned, destroying athletic equipment and the girls locker room. City fireman Eugene Ames was slightly burned. President Andrew B. Martin said the building is insured for 50000 and repairs will start when materials arrive.
A Kansas State University scientist from the Dyche museum reports the cotton rat, a crop pest, has been found in Jackson county about 100 miles west south west of Holton. The crossing of the Kaw river marks an intrusion beyond known range and researchers plan a search north to the Nebraska border. The extent of northward infestation is still undetermined.
General MacArthur directed Japan to dissolve the Mitsui Mitsubishi Sumitomo Yasuda Zaibatsu and their holding firms to promote peaceful democratic development. He ordered resignations from all offices, transfer of securities to a new holding company liquidation commission, and a program ending monopolies under Allied supervision.
The report says United States Marines will be withdrawn soon from North China, likely by December 5, after completing their mission to restore order and help disarm Japanese forces. Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist troops are arriving in large numbers to take over, while isolated incidents of violence near Peiping and Chinwangtao test the fragile calm.
The Liberty Memorial high school board authorized Supt. R. George Saltzman to offer Hunt a junior high teaching job. Hunt, who left teaching in 1942 for military service, is expected to return when able. Bills of 28 524 44 were approved. The Associated Press reports three Lawrence residents will reach New York today from Europe. Corporal Hugh A. Randall of 121 East 16th Street Corporal Louis W. Heinrich aboard the Hermitage and Corporal Dale F. Black of 619 North Second Street aboard the Sheepshead Bay Victory. First Lieutenant Melvin L. Fizell of Bonner Springs is said to have arrived in Boston aboard the Sedalia Victory this past Sunday.

A delayed cold front may arrive tomorrow night or Thursday, with lows 30 to 40 in the northwest and 50 to 60 in the east and south. George Boswell Hutchings led a group of nine white men departing Lawrence for Fort Leavenworth for induction into the armed forces. Others named include Thad Norton Marsh, John Raymond Greer, and several residents with partial or misspelled addresses.
Judge Hugh Means opened the November term of Douglas county district court and scheduled nine jury cases for trial. Toneka, Nov. 6. Two Douglas county farms homesteaded in 1804 are tied for top honors in the state board of agriculture search for a farm owned and operated by the same Kansas family for at least 75 years. a. C. Mohler, secretary of the board, named the Meairs homestead two miles south of Kansas University, Lawrence, and the George and Hannah Nog farm at Biz Springs as the tied entries.
G R Morris a 1T year old driver received superficial burns to face hands arms and legs when a truck with a 300 gallon butane tank caught fire after fueling at a main storage point near the Santa Fe branch tracks east of Has kell Institute on Highway 10 about 6 20 last night. The truck owned by Everett Christenson was destroyed by flames. Norris drove about 140 feet from the tank when the fire started near the motor and flames spread backward over the truck. Fire officials said the cause was undetermined though heat opened the release valve and released butane gas that burned rapidly. Norris escaped with minor injuries, was treated by a physician, and went home to work today. Fire department cooled timbers under the dock. Fire Chief Paul Ingels helped transport Norris to medical care.
London dispatch reports Foreign Commissar Molotov urging Allied control of Japan in a Moscow address marking the Soviet anniversary. He says secrecy about atomic energy should end, and notes Japan’s war experience underlines the need for a negotiated peace while seeking control of the skies over Japan.
Great Bend city council authorizes city attorney to draft an ordinance aligned with U S public health service guidance for milk regulation. An October health inquiry found about 90 percent of local milk unsafe. enteritis epidemic has largely abated for children, with adult cases anticipated weeks longer. Mayor notes no recent deaths.
Discharged veterans returning to Lawrence are mounting, with 124 jobless applicants at the U S Employment Service as of this morning. Albert I Decker notes October inflow outpaced opportunities. 21 new applicants yesterday and six placements left 124 to be placed. Many are high point men with little prewar work, and employers are urged to list openings to absorb veterans. Special provisions aid disabled veterans through apprentice periods. Some ex workers await return to prewar jobs with former employers.

Geringer rumored to join University of Kansas Jayhawker staff though athletic director denies plan.
In Paris on November 6 Gen De Gaulle submitted his resignation as provisional president to the constituent assembly. The assembly will likely ask him to remain as caretaker until a new provisional president is named for the seven month task of drafting a new constitution for France's fourth republic.
The Civic Action Council urged strong approval of the proposed city bond issue to be voted on November 20. A Wednesday meeting at 7 30 p m at the Chamber of Commerce will draw heads of about 15 civic and patriotic groups. City council members will speak on the six projects including two new city buildings at Eighth and Vermont, a garbage disposal unit, park extensions, airport improvements, swimming pools, and a new city garage at Fifth and Mississippi.
Joyce Rist, 7, missing from grandparents’ home at 310 Elm Street since October 28, is safe in Winchester Tennessee. Officers say Joyce and a woman, Patricia Gruszuske believed Pauline Davis, were located in Descherd Tennessee with the woman held. Deputy filed third degree kidnapping charges and plans to return them to Lawrence for prosecution.
Winchester Tennessee dispatch reports Pauline Davis was found with Joyce in Decherd after a Kansas City trip. The Douglas County Kansas warrant tied to the missing Joyce Risi from Lawrence, Kansas prompted Sheriff J A Smith to locate the pair with the child’s grandparents confirming permission to take Joyce. Joyce refused to return alone, aiding the Tennessee stopover.
Sunflower Ordnance Works employees face a fifty percent cut in powder making pacing. Plant officials could not yet state how the reduction will impact current staffing numbers at the factory. Evan Wright led a germ demonstration at the food handlers school to teach safe practices for cafes and stores. The Lawrence-Douglas county health unit reports 60 establishments enrolled, with 310 attending both sessions. The next classes will discuss dish washing, food handling, and personal hygiene.
More than a thousand pictures of local service men have been submitted for the World War II book to be published by Myers Printing of Topeka. The publishers seek a higher share of Douglas county men but acceptances end in about a week. Mrs. L. E. Pheeters will collect late pictures at the Community building daily between 8 am and 5 pm, excluding Saturday afternoon. Submission does not require purchase. Endorsers include Charles Corel of the VFW and Howard Moore of the Legion. Call for 84 Electricians.
The Weather District forecast covers Missouri Kansas Oklahoma and Nebraska with rain in the northwest half Wednesday and most of the district Thursday and Friday for Missouri Oklahoma and eastern Kansas. Nebraska mainly dry with rain or snow elsewhere. Precipitation moderate to heavy except light in southern Oklahoma, warmer toward period end, temperatures near or slightly above normal. Kansas shows increasing cloudiness and mildness tonight with scattered showers in eastern third, low 25-40 northwest and 60 southeast. Wednesday is mostly cloudy with scattered showers and cooler in northwest and north central regions.
