Orders Plunge as U.S. Manufacturing Falters
Commerce Department reports September factory orders fell 2.5 percent from August, exceeding expectations and layering on a prior 4.3 percent drop. Excluding autos and aircraft, orders fell 3.7 percent, the steepest since 1992. Durable goods rose slightly in one category while nondurable goods collapsed 5.5 percent. Autoparts and car orders turned up 2.7 percent in October, but analysts warn this is likely temporary amid credit constraints and weak demand.
