Cairo reports a shattered Rommel force fleeing western Egypt under heavy losses. 9,000 prisoners streamed back as Allied air power struck at the retreat and the coastal line became a graveyard of wrecked tanks and transports.
Washington reports fresh Allied advances in Guadalcanal and New Guinea. Marines and soldiers captured about 20 machine guns and two field guns on Guadalcanal while MacArthur’s force pushed toward Buna, overcoming strong resistance. Navy planes supported the push, and Japanese moves east of Henderson were not disclosed.
CBS report from Cairo quotes Lieut Gen B L Montgomery to the British Eighth Army. He declares the enemy is in their power and nearly ready to crack. He urges troops to maintain pressure and not relax, saying they have a chance to bag the panzer army and achieve complete victory.
Allied forces extend advance on all sectors while Axis posts in the western desert are probed. Rommel may be absent from the front as British air attacks disrupt supply lines and carrier a heavy price in aircraft.

Russian HQ says Germans threw freight regiments into the northside attack and widened the offensive, only to meet stiff resistance. In the Caucasus they say captured strong points and about 400 German deaths along the Black Sea coast northeast of Tuapse, with further gains near Mozdok and Nalchik plateau facing 50,000 Nazis.
Lawmakers pressed for repeal of wage hour and Wagner laws while calling for a wartime coalition. Senators and representatives blamed bureaucracy, urged fewer government errors, and warned against communists in key posts as they weighed war policy.
Canvassing of ballots from Kansas general election will begin in counties with county commissioners as official boards. In-state absentee ballots are counted next Tuesday and the state canvassing board counts next week. Last election the out-of-state absentee tally decided Governor Ratner's race by 430 votes. This year absentee totals are not expected to be close, with about 2 000 ballots and 2 730 Kansans requesting absentee ballots.
University of Wichita official Frank A. Neff, dean of the College of Business Administration and Industry, was named area director for Wichita of the War Manpower Commission. The appointment by Ed McDonald is effective immediately and tasks Neff with coordinating the commission's agency work locally to place every worker where he can serve best regardless of race creed or color.
The Lawrence Community Chest total reached 14687.80 at noon, surpassing the 13880 quota by 807.50. Funds enable Salvation Army KUYM YWCA Social Service League Boy and Girl Scouts 4 H and United Christian groups to operate next year and finance a December Christmas program. The budget committee will meet at four this afternoon as workers are urged to finish solicitations and close the campaign.
In Chicago on November 5 government witnesses FBI agents Vernell Robe and John A. Lynch testified at a treason trial. They said money hidden in a small zipper bag in Walter Froehling's home was intended for aiding Nazi saboteurs. Froehling, his wife, Hans Haupt and Otto Wergin and their spouses face charges of aiding Herbert Haupt before his capture and execution.
Berlin broadcasts report a sharp setback for the Roosevelt administration in U S elections. No German comment, with interpretations credited to Swedish and French journalists. Le Matin in Paris runs a headline warning Roosevelt, and a Matin editorial suggests United States voters torpedo the White House with Roosevelt aboard.
Unofficial election returns show Schoeppel leading for governor with 281 848 votes and Burke at 206 627 from 2714 of 2740 precincts. Copper leads Senate race over McGill by 277 614 to 195 618 from 2716 precincts. Also notes Italian fascist line shifts in Egypt and Allied air strikes severing Rommel's supply chain with French paratroopers damaging Axis airfields in the Beirut region.
The War Production Board designated Leavenworth Kansas as a defense housing critical area. The status grants priority assistance for building dwelling units for war workers and for families of military personnel.
The sub-office for Douglas and Franklin counties of the Topeka Lawrence rent control area opened at 726 Massachusetts Street. Charles F. Reed rent director and Howard Jones acting defense rental attorney lead the staff. The office runs 9 am to 5:30 pm with eight total staff but is partially staffed awaiting regional approval. Reed said many Lawrence residents called about eviction and rent reductions since March 1 and advised tenants on paying March rents without rent director approval.
Washington reports American defenders on Guadalcanal have killed 350 Japanese in successful actions against reinforced enemy troops on the eastern flank. The communique notes capture of three field pieces, twelve 37 mm guns, and 30 machine guns, plus naval shelling near Kokumbona.
Jurors selected for the November term will report Thursday November 19 for criminal trial work. Civil jury trials are scheduled Monday November 23 through Wednesday November 25 with cases including Quisenberry versus Kennedy and related damages cases, plus contract disputes and suit against the Alamo Shows.
In New York on November 5 Wendell L. Willkie quoted Lieut. Gen. B. L. Montgomery from a visit in Egypt two months earlier. Montgomery supposedly vowed to eliminate Rommel and Willkie said Montgomery is well on his way to that goal.
Yugoslav government in exile reports that Germany killed 322 captives in two northwestern towns last month in reprisal for a military transport train bombing.
Stanton County topped Kansas counties in scrap collection with 838.25 pounds per person during the newspaper school salvage campaign, Byron Gourley reported. Harvey County was second with 707.06 pounds per capita and Scott County third with 533.11. Sedgwick County gathered the largest total at 24,534,000 pounds, though per capita average was 148.69.
Andrew Jackson Parnell age 78 died last evening at his sister’s home after a two week illness. He served on the Douglas county board of commissioners when the courthouse was built in 1902 and later as county collector from 1934 to 1938. Funeral Saturday at 2 pm Funk Mortuary chapel with Rev. Lawrence Deever officiating. Burial Oak Hill Cemetery. He was a Republican and active in politics for decades. Survived by two daughters, one son, seven grandchildren, three sisters and two brothers.
Cold air from the north will drop readings below freezing in northwest Kansas with possible light showers in the southeast. Topeka and Wichita saw small rainfall, while Goodland recorded a high of 74 and a low of 25.
The rationing office move to the Community building may be postponed due to redecorating problems. A glued ceiling composition board failed to stick and is now blocked with two by fours to improve noise control. The move was planned for this weekend.
Douglas county selective service board received a fifth November quota. Thirty one men will be fed breakfast at a local cafe before boarding a chartered bus at 7 a.m. to the induction center Fort Leavenworth.
The Lawrence board of education and Superintendent Clifford D. Dean propose transferring all colored students from Pinckney McAllaster and Cordley to Lincoln in North Lawrence starting Monday November 16 to relieve crowded conditions. About 90 children would ride buses provided by Rapid Transit. hot lunches would be served and local schools would return students after the day. The plan notes need for additional Lincoln teachers and space as enrollment rises due to Sunflower Ordnance Works development.
A trailer house owned by Bob Somers at 1126 Rhode Island street burned last evening around 7 30 from a gasoline stove explosion. Fire Chief Paul Ingels reported the blaze. A garage at 1121 Rhode Island owned by Sam Fordice also caught fire but was extinguished with no damage.
Navy reports the U S merchant ship was torpedoed off the north coast of South America and sank in 90 seconds. Seventy one crewmen perished, nineteen survived, among 71 deaths rising AP tally to 516 ships lost in the western Atlantic since Pearl Harbor.
