Nobel physicist Albert Einstein voted in Princeton New Jersey in his first American election. The article notes his historic participation as the nation prepares for a close presidential contest with Roosevelt and Willkie leading in several states.
Willkie moves ahead of Roosevelt in Missouri early returns as voters cast ballots in record numbers. In four outstate precincts Willkie led 147 to 96. Springfield totals showed Willkie ahead, and Poplar Bluff precinct favored Roosevelt. Voter turnout rose despite cold weather with forecast record statewide votes.
Greek high command reports continued gains around Koritza as Evzone troops tighten the trap on about 4000 Italian soldiers behind Greek lines. Albania bases, mountain fortifications, and the captured hill positions indicate a widening Greek encirclement with prisoners, wrecked munitions, and downed planes.
Emma E. Blake, 92, voted for the first time in Keene New Hampshire and said she cast a straight Republican ticket for Willkie. Mrs. C. B. Bishop, 88, voted for Wendell Willkie in Cincinnati Ohio, her first vote.
Residents of the Hawaiian islands voted today on statehood. Aides of Delegate Samuel King said the plebiscite is one step in the process before Hawaii can enter the union as the forty-ninth state.
Workers recovered the bodies of airline travelers from the Wasatch mountains after a United Air Lines plane struck a 7000 foot slope northeast of Salt Lake City. The eastbound flight from San Francisco, forced by a snowstorm, broke in half and killed seven passengers, a stewardess, and three crew members. A pack train then transported the remains to Salt Lake City.
Douglas county voters flocked to 26 precincts under clear weather to support Republican candidates. Early totals showed Willkie leading Roosevelt for president and Ratner ahead of Burke for governor, with Guyer ahead of Harding for congress. An ambulance carried patient Eugene Brune to vote before returning home.
British air ministry reported three German bombers shot down after daylight raids failed to pass London defenses. Londonites fled to shelters as bombs fell on coastal areas amid continued RAF battles over the southeast. The government described the raids as widespread with limited casualties and damage.
Lawrence Board of Health named Dr Wray Enders as superintendent of public health to replace Dr J M Mott during military duty. Enders earned an MD from the University of Kansas in 1936 and previously assisted Dr H P Jones in county medical work. He trained at St Margaret's Kansas City and KU hospital before coming here.

Topeka Kansas November 5 Republican State Chairman Walter Fees said the G O P majority may exceed his 79 000 forecast. He cited early precinct reports showing Willkie leading Roosevelt 2034 to 1129 and Ratner 1713 to 1132 for Burke in several counties.
Distress calls from three mid Atlantic hours apart report a Graf Spee class raider shelling a British liner and a freighter about 1000 miles east of New Foundland. The liner Rangitiki and the freighter Cornish City are in distress after attack mid Atlantic.
Washington reports that control of the U S house of representatives is the second major national stake in the 1940 election. 432 seats are at stake in the house and 35 in the senate with gubernatorial votes in 33 states. 10 percent expected rise in total presidential vote.
In Omaha on election day November 5 Harry Senez 24 partially blind man spent an hour and nineteen minutes marking seven ballots. He called voting a privilege and said the time was time well spent.
In Rochester Gates and Henderson readers reveal voting loyalties. Henry Lilly 99 votes GOP since the 1860s. Julius Howell 94 supports straight Democratic ticket in 1930s. John Hunter 105 votes Republican Willkie after 105 years of voting.
The Lawrence Community Chest total reached 10005.61 at 2 30 pm, over the 9446 goal by 559 61 with final reports pending from workers. General chairman Walter Schaal and Mrs A B Weaver praise volunteers and urge remaining contributions, noting excess funds stay in the treasury for next year.
Washington reports Cabinet members with New York homes voted in person while most Roosevelt aides cast absentee ballots. Key figures include Morgenthau, Jackson, Walker, Perkins, Hull, Ickes, Jones, Wickard, Stimson, and Knox traveling or mailing ballots to Tennessee Texas Illinois Indiana Chicago Huntington L I and Chicago with several casting absentee ballots.
A Reuters dispatch says a second Italian submarine, chased by British destroyers, sought shelter in Tangier harbor last night. Earlier, the first submarine anchored there after being chased. Reuters cited a reliable source claiming three submarines were sunk in the Strait of Gibraltar.
Adjutant General Milton R. McLean announced preliminary reports show 405 Kansas draft volunteers, more than double the initial quota of 157. From 90 boards the largest counts were Shawnee County No. 1 with 37 and Ellis 23, while 15 boards reported no volunteers.
Officials expect attendance near or above 13 000 for the Kansas Oklahoma football game in Memorial Stadium on Saturday amid fair ticket sales. Reserved seats $2 25, high school 50 cents, children 25 cents, general $1 10. Kickoff at 2 PM. Four radio stations will air the game. KU band plans a historic halftime pagent. OU band will not attend.

Lynchburg South Carolina November 5 GP Ellison D Cotton Ed Smith dean of the United States senate stayed home from the polls rather than vote for President Roosevelt who sought unsuccessfully to defeat him in his 1988 race for the senate The 76 year old senator said I don t approve of him and I couldn t vote for him He added there was no Democrat to vote for and I will vote the Democratic ticket only.
Italian bombers attacked three sites around Athens at noon. The strike kept the city under its longest alert of the nine day war.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill warned Britain that U-boat depredations threaten more than air raids. He cited losses of Empress of Britain Laurentic and Patrol craft, noted Irish ports restrictions, and urged continued resolve for campaigns of 1943 and 1944.

Voters in Oakland California called County Clerk G E Wade to complain that Miss Al Smith s name was left off the presidential ballot Wade thought the mix up stemmed from the radio address by former Democratic candidate Al Smith who was broadcast in support of Wendell L Willkie leaving voters with the impression he was running again for president.
At age 102 in Baldwinville Mrs Myra L Paine reportedly became the oldest voter in Massachusetts to cast a ballot as she exited a polling place where she confirmed she voted the straight Republican ticket.
The forecast calls for fair weather tonight and Wednesday with colder eastern portions and a killing frost tonight. Temperatures are expected to run below normal across the region from Tuesday evening through Saturday with a warming trend Friday, and light to moderate showers possible in parts of Kansas Oklahoma and Missouri late Friday and Saturday.
