Rare limb-sparing cancer surgery at KU hospital
Kansas University Hospital surgeons performed a 10 hour operation on a 19 year old from southwest Missouri with bone cancer in his left arm. The cancerous limb was amputated but nerves were preserved and implanted in chest muscles to improve prosthesis control. This targeted muscle reinnervation is rare worldwide and KU's case is the first cancer patient and the first high level amputation treated this way.
