District to review high school transport policies

School District 497 will study transportation costs and vehicle availability for senior high students in North Lawrence amid a petition from 12 residents. The board will hear the request at the November 17 meeting and consider how policy changes could affect funding and service.

Theft of Gun and TV Reported to Police

Nancy Bell reported a portable television set and a 12 gauge pump shotgun missing from her apartment between Saturday and 11 p.m. Monday. Loss valued at 230 dollars after entry through an unlocked window. Police say a counterfeit twenty dollar bill was also recovered and another theft investigated. A second report notes a Brittany Spaniel stolen from a pen at 2116 Ohio with another dog left behind.

Four Nominated for Slots on Federal Reserve Board

Four men were nominated to fill two directorships on the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City board. Ballots will be cast Nov 3–18, with new directors serving until Dec 31, 1972, for the district banks in Kansas Nebraska Wyoming Colorado most of Oklahoma New Mexico and western Missouri.

Soldier Charged in Death of Unborn Baby in Key West

A 20-year-old soldier on leave before Vietnam duty was charged with second degree murder for kicking the mother in the stomach. County Solicitor also filed manslaughter against Robert Maitland Pinder. Babette Pinder, 18, hemorrhaged after the assault and delivered the stillborn baby. Pinder held in Monroe County jail.

USD 497 Delays Payments on School Construction Contracts

USD 497 board postponed four of ten payment requests from the building fund tied to South Junior High and Broken Arrow Elementary projects. The delay followed questions about carpet acceptance and architectural approval, with a Dec 1 meeting set to resolve payments after issues are corrected. Landscape plans for Broken Arrow-South foresee 45k to 55k in work including six tennis courts.

Journal-World reporters heard chatter about a dead man unearthed by city crews on the Kansas River bank. After checks, city engineer Bob Dark clarified the term meant a dead man anchor, not a body, ending with campus‑level laughter.

October building permits decline after record September

After a record September, October building starts were half the prior month and $80,000 below last October. The city issued $1,418,620 in permits this October versus $1,498,700 a year earlier, keeping 1969 year-to-date about 60 percent of 1968. Multi family starts dominated with $520,000, including a $240,000 Broadview Terrace six unit and a two six unit Rehab on Rockledge Road.
