Washburn and Emporia Teachers opened the season with a scoring duel in Topeka. Emporia led early, Washburn answered in the second period, and both teams traded touchdowns as the game unfolded in the homecoming clash.
Detectives who shadowed the Teapot Dome case are summoned. William J. Burns and his operatives are named in the Washington hearings. District Attorney Nell announces a grand jury investigation and calls Boris and W Sherman Burris to testify with records. Sheldon Clark of Sinclair Refining may appear in the capital for the probe. Nearly 3,000 teachers from southeastern Kansas attend a state association meeting in Pittsburg.
Miss Vona Kenny, 18, was mourned today in Cherryvale after a fatal motor car crash near town. Ray Mandy, allegedly involved, is in police custody as investigators await results of a stomach content analysis sent to the University of Kansas. Faculty at KU chemistry denied knowledge of the requested analysis.
Special Cairo dispatches report the discovery at Sakkara near Cairo of what is believed to be the tomb of King Zoser, ancient ruler of the third dynasty about 4,000 B C. If confirmed it surpasses Tutankhamen's tomb in archaeological significance. VP M Firth, head of the antiquities department, notes a side shaft collapse has limited work, but metallic glints are seen far underground.
Senator Shortridge of California says Hoover is gaining daily popularity in mountain and coast states and would win California by at least 306,000 votes if nominated. He predicts Hoover would defeat Gov. Smith of New York or any other Democrat by a substantial margin. He spoke after a White House visit. The report also notes Mellon tax figure of 225 million dollars as administration’s proposed reduction.

Mrs James Patrick of Lawrence Kansas a regent of the University of Kansas spoke at a conference of governing boards of state universities outlining a junior college system as a step toward a state university. She noted Kansas junior college enrollment rose from 447 in 1923 24 to 1141 last year illustrating growing demand.
Enthusiastic Kansas University alumni gathered last night at Hotel Lamer in Salina for a reunion. George O. Foster, KU registrar, reported about ninety attendees from the class of 1908 and other former students. Dr. John Harvey served as toastmaster, with Frank Parl Bers guiding events and cheering noted as unusually strong.
Preliminary hearing for Benjamin Brown, charged with the slayings of George Klein of Oklahoma and Nev Smith of Wichita, was set for November 18 before Justice G H Stewart after Brown declined bond and entered a plea of innocence claiming a frame up. Klein's widow provided statements denying prior acquaintance with Brown.
Twenty nine cast members announced for SW S G A Vogue Style show to be staged November 14 and 15. Committee led by Jo Brown announced the cast including Leoni Patucek Marion Dillenbeck Mary Cushing and many others. Becket center washed away by a ruptured dam. trains disrupted. widespread evacuations and warnings. Relief workers dispatched by Red Cross to coordinate aid.
George Marble editor of the Democratic Monitor-Tribune in Bourbon County will read the Men’s class at the First Baptist church on Sunday morning. The subject is Law Enforcement, a topic he has long studied. Marble, a reformer with independent views, has contributed to local roads and dairying industries and recently built a new home for his paper. If needed, the class will move to the church auditorium.
Topeka November 4 AP Religious education was praised as a practical teaching in a Kansas State Teachers association convention resolution. It urged church renewal of moral and religious instruction and applying scientific methods and modern schooling for child training. A second resolution urged legislative action on mineral production and a luxury tax to fund education and remove funding inequalities. The association commended the legislature for creating a state subtool code commission.
Topeka November 4 An AP report says W E Sheffer of Manhattan was elected vice president of the northeast section of the Kansas State Teachers Association. Officials named for sections include Dean Lawson Lawrence and Ruth Scott Emporia. Dr Ratick Kansas State Teachers College warned of sod schools and unequal funding as a key issue. He cited 121,000 pupils in antiquated one room facilities and urged reform of the state school code and tax distribution.
The November term of the district court opens Monday at 9 AM Judge Hugh Means will receive paroled persons. Some applicants may seek naturalization but most work is by a government officer. First jury trial Tuesday and criminal cases run Wednesday Thursday and Monday November 14. The court will not sit Friday or Saturday. The Merchants National bank celebrated its fifty years with a banquet at Wiedemann's grill room attended by stockholders employees and friends. Toastmaster F W March introduced G W E Griffith the founder and first president who at 94 recalled bank failures before 1877 and the bank's recovery with dollar-for-dollar payout. Other speakers included W W Bowman J W Simons and guest of honor four local friends. Prof Eugene Christy sang as ninety attendees observed the golden anniversary with yellow decor candles and floral arrangements.
Detroit voters four days from election confront a municipal contest linked to prohibition. Incumbent Mayor John W. Smith pledges support for liquor resorts and "blind" pigs under voter approval while challenger John Lodge, tied to Lindbergh’s uncle, wields silence to avoid the issue. Both are Republicans, with outside interest complicating the race.
S A Lengel former Canton police chief was granted a new trial by the district court of appeals. The decision cites insufficient evidence to sustain the verdict, trial court charge errors, incompetent testimony, and a juror remark. The case concerns the killing of Don R Mellett, Canton publisher, in 1926.
Paris Nov 4 AP Ruth Elder, exhausted from her Atlantic flight and repairs, returns to the United States after the sea voyage. She declines to meet a committee of prominent French women fliers, saying only dressmakers should be sent to her at the hotel.
The Plymouth Congregational Church will hold a union Armistice Service on November 5 at 8 PM. Clergy expect larger attendance than Armistice Day events and invite Liberty and Eli Ferrell Dorsey American Legion posts, with a guest speaker from another state under consideration awaiting acceptance. The National Guard unit in Lawrence will also be invited to participate.

Kansas City reports Harlow S Blackie Barnes dies in hospital after being shot as police suspect gangsters. Police say he aided police in a trap against jewel thieves and possibly was killed while entering his yard. Detectives, bandits escaped. Barnes had a police record.
