Topeka freshman starts teen GOP group
Hayden High School freshman Matthew Gatschet started a Topeka teen Republican group after the Supreme Court health care ruling. Unable to meet on campus because Hayden is church run, he held the first meeting at the local library with only one other attendee. The group grew to ten at a subsequent home gathering as Gatschet relies on Facebook and seeks mentors while balancing conservative views amid a youth dominated by Democrats.

Abortions and births decline in Kansas in 2011
Kansas health officials report 2011 saw a 4.6 percent drop in abortions from 2010 and births fall to 13.8 per 1,000 residents, the lowest since 1912. About 88 percent of abortions occurred by 13 weeks and over 85 percent were to unmarried women, with 39,628 babies born in 2011 versus 40,439 in 2010.
