GM seeks EPA suspension of 1985 diesel limits
General Motors says it will ask the Environmental Protection Agency to suspend the 1985 diesel particulate standards after the Supreme Court left the rules in place. GM contends the trap oxidizer will not be ready and the 200 percent tougher limits will cripple 1985 vehicle production. GM plans to file a supplementary request this week, arguing EPA authority to hold the rules during review. The agency has not acted on a prior suspension request, and the Reagan administration is reviewing whether to relax the standards adopted in 1980. Diesel cars are projected to reach about a quarter of the market by 1985.
