County officials Delbert Mathia Sue Neus lifter and Sheriff’s Lt. Cassity supervise a slow but busy count, while local figures Booth Glover and Berman contend for leads as results come in.
With 99 percent of Kansas ballots counted Douglas County leaned toward Ford with 51.3 percent and Carter 42.8 percent. McCarthy drew 5 percent statewide but over 10 percent in the county as 1,355 voted for him. Incumbent congressman Winn led the county with 61.3 percent while Rhoads earned 36.5 percent locally.
American Party candidate Mary Hyatt and Prohibition Party candidate Howard Hadin each win small vote shares. Fletcher Bell dominates statewide for state commissioner of insurance with 8& percent and carries Douglas County with 88.5 percent, 82 percent statewide.
Lawrence reports 22 single family permits in October 1976, total year to date 256 new houses, the largest in seven years. October construction value hits 1 195 625 dollars with Packer Plastics expansion worth 350 000 and bond financed. Total October permits reach 1 810 790 dollars, with 12 915 miscellaneous work and 9 100 signs.

David W. Vaughn son of Mr and Mrs Donald Vaughn Lawrence has enlisted in the U S Air Force. He departed for Lackland AFB San Antonio Texas for six weeks of basic training after a recent high school graduation.
Lawrence city commissioners in a rapid session gave initial approval to Packer Plastics Inc for issuing 875000 in industrial revenue bonds to add a 50000 square foot warehouse and 250000 in new machinery. The project aims to add 10 to 12 permanent jobs.
Voters narrowly defeated a $4 limit on property taxes in Kansas City Kansas. Unofficial returns show 24 163 against and 22 852 in favor, with city officials warning the measure would cause a disastrous budget cut.
Honoring the 4-H Family of the Year will be featured at the Douglas County 4-H Achievement Awards Banquet at 6 30 p m today in the Kansas Union Ballroom. About 700 attendees are expected as the event recognizes 4-H participants and marks a new year of operation.
