Nixon campaigns in South to woo Dixie votes

Vice President Richard M. Nixon urged Southern voters to back him over Sen. John F. Kennedy accusing Kennedy of courting a costly foreign policy that could plunge the nation into war. Nixon warned the South against untested leadership and condemned Kennedy's Democratic platform as dangerous foolishness while tallying support from Eisenhower.

GOP Rally Set Friday Night at Fairgrounds

A caravan parade will start at 6 p.m. from Hotel Eldridge signaling the Republican covered dish dinner at the Fairgrounds Building No 1. Speakers include Sen Andrew Schoeppel gubernatorial candidate John Anderson and Robert Ellsworth with 400 to 500 attendees expected.

Firemen Fight Multiple Small Blazes in Lawrence

Lawrence firemen were kept busy with trash and grass fires starting before noon. They responded to burning leaves on an asphalt street and later to trash fires on North Seventh Street and in the Illinois street block aided by windy conditions.

Armory bid led by Topeka firm on Kansas Turnpike project

Apparent low bid for the Army National Guard armory near the Hallmark Plant site goes to Underwood Construction Co. of Topeka with $141,400. Six bids opened by the state purchasing division. Lawrence firms B A Green Construction Co and Constant Construction Co placed third and fourth with $151,122 and $155,355. Contract award pending state architect review in about a week.

Peery Campaigns In Lawrence Before Rallies Across Kansas

Walter H. Peery, Republican candidate for state treasurer, campaigned in Lawrence this morning en route to Kansas City and Overland Park where he planned a rally tonight. He said he will return to Lawrence Friday night for the Republicans covered dish dinner at the 4 H Fairgrounds. Though his first run for public office, Peery cited 35 years of business experience as his qualification.

Court fines for vagrancy and traffic violations

In Elmonte, California, County Court judge Robert M. Dun fined a man $50 for vagrancy. In a separate traffic case, County Court judge Norman G. Steanson, of 631 East 23rd, fined $10 for driving without a current license.

Kennedy Predicts Election Victory in Arizona Rally

Senator John F Kennedy told a Phoenix crowd that Arizona and the nation will go Democratic next week. He mocked Barry Goldwater and attacked Republican records on conservation and space and water projects. He urged electing Americans to serve abroad and said his campaign could mobilize a strong peace corps. He flew on to Albuquerque and other stops with the message of a coming win.
