Poll workers keep democracy moving in Douglas County

In Douglas County a cadre of about 400 poll workers will toil for at least 14 hours on election day earning 110 to 125 dollars each. The majority are retirees with an average age around 72, many volunteering beyond polling duties. They ensure voter rolls, proper ballots, IDs and provisional ballots, then two drivers transport ballots to the courthouse for tallying. They work in bipartisan teams and view the role as a civic duty that remains foundational amid changing technology. Virginia Lawhorn notes pride in serving, while her daughter Judy Romero joins them this year at East Lawrence.

Kansas campaign themes hinge on GOP turnout and Obama critique

The Kansas election is framed as a referendum on Barack Obama and Democratic leadership. Roberts, Brownback, and GOP allies push a message to energize conservative Republicans, with national figures like Mitt Romney and Mike Lee campaigning in Topeka. Polls show discontent among Republicans toward the party’s direction, potentially boosting independent candidate Orman and Democrat Davis depending on turnout patterns.

Lawrence City voter guide letter backs police facility sales tax

A Lawrence resident urges support for a 0.2 percent sales tax approved by the City Commission to fund a new police facility for the Lawrence Police Department. The plan would raise about 24.2 million dollars plus financing costs, with potential early retirement if cap reached within nine years, underscoring public safety as a community priority.
