Officials report a busy election day as record advance voting draws near. In Douglas County almost 8,400 ballots were cast in advance, nearly double the 2000 level, with voters including students, seniors, and workers voting at the courthouse.
Polls open 7 am to 7 pm Tuesday at numerous Lawrence locations. Sites include Pinckney School 810 W Sixth St, Lawrence Public Library 707 Vt, USD 497 Admin Center 110 McDonald Dr, Plymouth Congregational 925 Vt, South Park Rec Center 141 Mass, Hillcrest School 1045 Hilltop Dr, KU Affiliated venues, First Baptist 1330 Kasold, and many others across city. Voters should check their specific polling place and bring required IDs.
The Douglas County listing shows voting sites including Eudora City Hall and Lecompton City Hall among others. Reports note first time voters and last advance ballots cast with individuals mentioning their choices like Bush, Kerry, and Nader. Kansas advance voting ran Oct 13 to the close on Monday. Secretary Thornburgh projected a record 1.29 million Kansans voting statewide.
Douglas County officials urge first time voters to present an acceptable form of identification at polls today. Those registered with ID do not need to show it again. others must show a utility bill bank statement paycheck stub passport driver license or military or student ID. EU IDs for KU students are valid. Poll workers are reminded no campaign signs within 250 feet of polling sites with penalties up to 30 days in jail and 500 dollars.
Polls run 7 am to 7 pm with in line voters allowed to cast ballots. Douglas County residents may call 832-5147 or visit www.douglas-county.com for voting locations. Free transit or taxi rides offered to voters. an election watch party is planned at Abe and Jake’s Landing with Gov Kathleen Sebelius and Larry Gates.
