The New York Times CBS poll shows President Carter losing trust in government with 55 percent overall approval from Oct 23 to 26, down from 66 percent in January. Blacks drop from 83 percent in April to 69 percent in July, while public confidence in Congress remains around 30 percent.
Agriculture Secretary Bergland said a smaller than expected Soviet harvest reported by Moscow could lift U.S. grain exports and domestic prices. He noted the 194 million ton estimate, if confirmed, might prompt changes in 1978 planting plans and support a 1977-78 export surge.
Clyde Walker of Kansas University presented a plan to levy up to a 1 surcharge on football tickets to fund about 2 million dollars in Memorial Stadium improvements. He urged that a decision will come at a KU Athletic Corporation meeting within three weeks after questions from about 50 attendees.
Maurits Caransa, 61, says he negotiated a 10 million guilders ransom after being abducted in Amsterdam and held five days in a dark den. He reports the four captors sought money, spoke French and English, but gave no threat to his life. The real estate tycoon returned home with family and described the crime as purely criminal, not political.
Henry Brisbon, 21, received 1000 to 3000 years in prison for the June 3 1973 killings of Dorothy Cerny and James Schmidt both 25. Judge Bailey said the term should deter parole boards and expressed remorse at not able to impose death. Brisbon was 17 at the time of the crimes.
The Clinton Lake Historical Society will meet at 7 30 p m Thursday at Martha Parker’s Rt 2 Overbrook to discuss an interpretive center in the Bloomington public use area. The Army Corps of Engineers intends to dismantle the Steele House and preserve parts of the structure in a new building and has asked the society to review the proposal.
Lawrence city commissioners on Tuesday urged enforcement of alarm penalties after alarms from private businesses produced 483 calls in nine months, with just five caused by intruders. Mayor Argersinger noted the strain on police responses and one firm recorded 22 false alarms. The vote was 4 to 0 with Ed Carter abstaining.
The State Fire Marshal’s office will inspect all buildings at KU Medical Center in Kansas City and KU campus in Lawrence starting Monday. Five inspectors will cover the Med Center and a six man team will evaluate about 150 buildings in Lawrence, with reports reviewed in Topeka for required improvements.
