Dozens of guests fled a basement blaze at a Chicago hotel near North Avenue and Clark streets. About one hundred men and women escaped via fire escapes and ladders as firemen aided wounded and exhausted patrons, with property losses estimated at 500 dollars.
An early morning explosion at the Metropolitan Torpedo company magazine near Butler Via Noy injured several people with cuts and bruises. Property loss was estimated at 245000 dollars as windows shattered within two miles and plaster fell from walls.
A Scandinavian mission in Nai hei District was attacked by anti foreign elements as missionaries Wendell and Erickson were stoned by locals who alleged native women were forced to become Christians and kept for illicit purposes. Order was restored.

New York dispatch says E. H. Harriman bought Central of Georgia stock sold by Oakleigh Thorne and Marsden J. Perry. The move ties Central of Georgia to Hollinois Central, linking at Birmingham. The purchase would give Harriman lines another outlet to the Atlantic.

Trustees seek payment of policies contested as Perkins’ death by his own action. Other suits are pending or planned against several insurers.
Miss Helen Balsley recounts a late night horseback coon and possum hunt near Lexington Kentucky. Twenty riders, hunters and dogs pursued coons as trees were shaken for the catch. The scene ends at a bonfire with soup and coffee as dawn rose.
San Francisco reports a scheduled forty five round heavyweight contest between Jack Johnson and Jim Flynn. Johnson leads betting at two to one though Flynn has notable support.
The Missouri and Kansas Telephone Co announces uniform long distance rates across Missouri and Kansas. Night rates rise to match day rates, ending the former 60 percent discount. Between Kansas City and Joplin the rate converts from 33 cents for three minutes and ten cents per extra minute to 70 cents for three minutes and 20 cents per extra minute.
Miss Gertende Mossler presented an afternoon of readings by her students Bernice Barker Patti Hiatt Bess McParland and Hannah Mitchell. Miss Hiatt showed special talent and the audience praised the performance highly aided by Mrs Lyons and Mrs Quigley.
Miss Gertrude Hutcheson leading woman of the Royal Chef company and Frank A. Wade manager and part owner wed at the Hollywood home of a friend of the bride last night. Both performed in the theater afterward. Wade was born and raised in the city and has many friends who wish him well.
Secretary Taft is hosted by the veterans of the late war in Manila. The program includes social events and will extend into the next week with talks on insular affairs led by Governor General Smith and the Philippine commissioners.
In Siloam Springs Arkansas Mrs Belle McConnell shot and killed a man living in her home who claimed to be the son of her late husband by Rev Biederwolf. The man was scheduled to preach two morning sermons at the Baptist church and had allegedly abused Mrs McConnell. She fired at him through a tent door with a shotgun. Sheriff Woodward and Roy Woodward detained Ed Clagett who is described as violently insane from Lake View. His brother arrived from Kansas City to take him home.
Wheat receipts total 55 cars with December at 89 54 cents and May at 97 cents. Corn spreads show December 51 4 cents and May 53 56 cents. Rye 68 72 cents. Hay prices range from 11 to 13 dollars per ton. Cattle receipts at 2 000 and hogs 2 500 with quotes around 5 60 to 5 95. Woodmen of America reports worry over finances after a man’s attempted self harm in Shawnee Oklahoma. Frances M Ingram adjudged unsound mind in probate court. Local classifieds list wagon burr inquiries and chili and shoe ads.
Cambridge, Mass. November 2. In anticipation of a hard fought contest between Harvard and Brown extensive preparations have been made for the crowd. Gossip before the game favored Harvard as a probable winner by a low score.
