Senate begins school finance debate in Kansas
The Kansas Senate opened a marathon session on its school funding bill, smaller than the House version. Debate paused to turn attention to a Senate tax bill. The plan would phase in $236 million more for two years, raise base per pupil aid to $4006 next year and to $4080 the following year, with slightly lower increases for free meal program districts. Lawrence would gain about $3.1 million next year under the Senate plan versus $3.4 million in the House bill.

Kansas Senate passes tax bill then bills fail in House
In Topeka, the Senate approved a tax measure aiming to raise about 600 million dollars annually by reinstating a higher income tax bracket and repealing the LLC exemption for over 330,000 farmers and business owners. Conservative lawmakers opposed it. Sen. Dennis Pyle waved a hundred dollar bill in protest as debate paused for a late vote, but the House rejected the bill before midnight due to a rule barring post midnight debate.
