Storm shelter standards may change how basements are marketed
The ICC added storm shelter standards to code and Lawrence updated its rules requiring shelters to withstand 250 mph winds and a 2x4 at 100 mph. Builders and real estate agents cannot label ungraded concrete rooms as storm shelters without meeting code, prompting questions about future shelter construction and marketing. Barry Walthall notes enforcement will tighten as inspectors scrutinize claims and designs. Mike Hultine of Cornerstone Construction discusses potential pushback from clients over costs and practicality.

Storm shelter doors face FEMA standards debate in Kansas fourplex
Texas Tech engineer Larry Tanner notes FEMA compliant doors use three deadbolts opposite the hinge and four inch hinges with a seal from the National Storm Shelter Association. The fourplex shelter built by Hultine lacks FEMA rated doors, risking occupants in adjacent rooms, fueling neighbor doubts and market hesitation. Street quotes show homeowners doubting safety and future builders reconsidering such designs.
