In San Francisco a monoplane named Southern Cross prepared for a 2,400 mile hop toward Honolulu and Australia. Captain Charles Kingsford-Smith led a crew including James Warner and Lieut. Harry Lyon, with optimism high despite fog and cloud. Officials reported a smooth takeoff and expect arrival in Honolulu within 25 hours.
The United States weather bureau reports favorable conditions for a flight from San Francisco to Hawaii and Australia. Expect broken low clouds and northeast winds up to 20 mph in the first leg, then lighter, variable winds near Hawaii, followed by clear skies and 16 to 20 mph east winds approaching the islands.
Fragmentary report notes partly cloudy skies tonight and Friday with thunderstorm chances. Temperature changes noted across Salina Topeka and Wichita regions with occasional rain and clear periods. Towns including Hutchinson Ottawa Pittsburg Coffeyville Arkansas City and Dodge City show varying conditions.
May 31 to May 31 reports describe Chang Tso Lin ordering forces to fall back to Kiuhho rail junction near Liulhe about 20 miles southwest of Peking. Northern troops withdraw after 2,500 casualties and defections, with Mukden headquarters noting easing fighting and Japanese expectation that Nationalists would soon occupy Peking.
United States Senator Heflin of Alabama testified before the Senate presidential campaign committee that he was not paid by Ku Klux Klan to speak against Governor Alfred E. Smith. Witnesses previously claimed payments ranged from 140 to 250 dollars per speech in Illinois Indiana Iowa Ohio North Carolina and New York. Heflin said he gave about 40 speeches last summer earning 150 dollars each and that the talks covered Nicaragua and the Knights of Columbus.
A Long Beach dispatch reports Charles A Lindbergh went missing briefly while flying from Grand Canyon to Arizona. He drifted over the Merced hills for about two hours before spotting a beacon near a Standard Oil beacon. a Long Beach police officer alerted the custodian who lit the beacon, enabling Lindbergh to land safely shortly after.
Severe storms sweep Salina and nearby towns with heavy soaking rains. Salina reports .55 of an inch, Lindsborg .79, while phone lines fail and traffic slows. In Meadville Missouri a major fire destroys much of the business district causing an estimated 350000 dollars in losses.
The annual lime and legume tour sponsored by the Douglas County Bankers Association, in cooperation with the Douglas County Farm Bureau, opens tomorrow morning at Kalb Farm four miles east of Bald. The inspection of the demonstration plot will be followed by two more stops in the morning and three in the afternoon with Chamber of Commerce members meeting at 8 am. Members are urged to drive cars and bring farmer friends. Separately a Tokyo dispatch reports about 400 fishermen drowned in a tidal wreck off Hokido coast. confirmation awaits.
President Coolidge selects Cedar Island Lodge on the Brule River near Superior Wisconsin as a summer White House. The estate, offered by heirs of Henry Clay Pierce, spans thousands of acres with a one story birch bark bungalow for the president and a mainland bungalow for staff, connected by a footbridge. The site is 12 miles from Chicago by air and several miles from Canada, with cool climate and river trout, set in Douglas County near the Canadian border.
AP reports a nationwide manhunt for the First National Bank raiders who looted Lamar Colorado and killed three. Detectives from seven Midwestern states search between Topeka and Hutchinson toward the Nebraska line. A private agency aids the effort as hopes rise to uncover the bandit lair and the fate of Kesinger the bank teller. $10,000 cash and $176,500 in bonds were taken. Kansas adds 300 to rewards, bringing total to 3,300. Lake County officials had offered 3,000 earlier. Suspect Duree questioned and released. authorities pursue others connected to the raid.
Washington May 31 AP President Coolidge, who urged abolishing war as tribute to war dead, will lay the cornerstone of the American Red Cross building dedicated to American women’s sacrifices and services in the World War. Chief Justice Taft will preside, and Secretary of War Davis will accept the memorial for the motion.
The Fritz Company unveils a large nine-pump Goodyear service station at Eighth and New Hampshire in Lawrence with a special Saturday Sunday offer of Martha Washington candy for customers buying five gallons or more. Ethyl Red Crown Jerhe and Iso-Vers oils featured. Fritz Meyn cites growth and community involvement.
In Pittsburgh May 81 AP the Pirates defeated St Louis 3 to 2 ending a six game losing streak. Pitchers Haines Strebecki and Hill and Smith contributed as Pittsburgh gained a narrow win. Philadelphia May 31 AP Boston won 4 6 over the Phillies in a game featuring a seven run second inning including a Sisler homer with two on. New York May 31 AP Yankees shut out Senators 4 0 as they prep for a west swing. The win pushes New York to an .800 winning percentage. St Louis May 31 AP Chicago White Sox won 7 2 in a doubleheader opener, Browns fall behind 7 2 after early Chicago rally. American Association and other brief notes include meeting plans for junior league managers and a junior coach transition.
Mrs Mary Banning and eight others were shaken up after a Buick sedan returning to Kansas City from Topeka went into a ditch east of Big Springs when struck by a westbound car that did not stop Adequate care was given to Mrs Banning at Memorial hospital and the group then returned to Topeka The other occupants escaped with minor injuries The hit and run vehicle sped away making license plate unobtainable and the Buick was demolished at the scene
A coach bus of the Interstate Stage Line left a 20-foot embankment on U.S. Highway 40 about 414 miles east of Topeka. Driver and one passenger were injured, with others shaken. G J Stanton of Kansas City sustained internal injuries and Gus Watson of Fairmont a broken ankle. Both were hospitalized in Topeka. several others reportedly injured, though not located in Topeka hospitals.
A Morrill Todd Logging crew traveling from Kanopolis to Ottawa was involved in a wreck that killed 15 men. Mitchell died from severe chest injuries, Ed Schenk of Ottawa suffered internal injuries, Walter Foster of Pita was only slightly hurt. The victims were part of a logging crew en route to Ottawa.
Floyd George a 20 year old professional boxer and former Effine ham high school star died when his car skidded and overturned on highway No 9 twelve miles west of Atchison. His body was found in the roadway by boys driving from Horton to Atchison. The car lay in a ditch nearby.

Seven boys riding in a boat on the lake when it filled with water and sank. Hunter and Meade are both first class Boy Scouts. Also notes arrests in a robbery case in Indianapolis May 31 with seven men suspected in the sensational 200 burglary at the Broadmoor country club last night loot valued at $100,000. Clarence Smiley, 64, of a camp east of the Kaw river bridge, was fined 100 dollars and sentenced to 30 days in county jail after attempting to bring three pints of alcohol concealed in a basket of beans into Lawrence. He was arrested by city officers when stepping off a interurban car from Kansas City.
The thirty sixth annual commencement week program begins this afternoon with a baseball game between Kansas Aggies and the School of Fine Arts. Activities include a recital in the University auditorium, senior class exercises in the stadium, and open buildings for visitors. A second game follows Saturday with a senior class reception and alumni events planned, alongside a series of concerts and memorials during the weekend.
