Senate leaders clash on homefront mood and war costs after memorial Day. Mike Mansfield warns of a detached public accepting billions in war costs, while Karl Mundt accuses dissenters of exploiting casualties and questions motives behind antiwar critique.
Kansas state controller Roy Shapiro 53 died after an apparent heart attack during a routine checkup in a doctor’s office. Governor Docking mourned the longtime public servant who modernized state accounting and led the National Association of State Controllers. He is survived by his widow, son Mark, daughter Jan, and brother Herman.
Gen. Earle G. Wheeler told Memorial Day ceremonies at Arlington that violence has been used as self defense by predator nations to gain objectives. A 9,100 pound cargo of .50 caliber machine gun ammunition was loaded at Topeka municipal airport for delivery to Israel. The ammo came from the Lake City arsenal near Independence, Missouri, loaded by a four man crew for $20 each. The flight plan was not filed and the aircraft proceeded to Kansas City then New York for transfer to El Al. A DoD spokesman confirmed the shipment left an Missouri arsenal to fulfill a four month old sales order.

Timothy S Byers 18 drove an eastbound auto into a south ditch after hitting a fence post and nearly toppled a culvert. Nancy Garcia 18 and Linda Blair 18 sustained minor injuries. Leonard Jackson 18 escaped injury. Vehicle damage was 350 dollars.

Mrs. Luella Vaccaro of 535 Kan will display her ceramic work in a one person show starting Sunday at The Galerie 910 from noon to 5 pm. The exhibition lasts about three weeks. She earned art degrees from Washington University Seattle and California University Berkeley and studied under potters Peter Voulkas and Robert Sperry. Her works have toured several states and many pieces are in private collections.

Johnny Colrain who is player coach of the Detroit Cougars has been suspended indefinitely after his team clashed with an official during a game against Boston in Lynn Massachusetts Sunday night. Dick Walsh, commissioner of the United Soccer Association, announced the action on Monday.
