British and French troops fight a rear guard action toward Dunkerque as Nazi forces close in. Some divisions reach a southeast English port for safety while civilians evacuate the southeast coast. Royal Air Force claims 69 German planes downed as war spreads to Britain and the royal family mourns.

Topeka notes scattered thunderstorms will continue across Kansas with soaking showers in the central and western counties tonight. Meteorologist A. D. Robb says southeast Kansas may miss rain while many areas see moisture tomorrow. Rain totals include Garden City .59 inch, Dodge City .09, Elkhart .26, Scott City .10, Sublette .18, Tribune trace. Maximums near 85 to 90, minimums 55 to 60.

Washington May 30 Six men and a woman from business industry labor agriculture transportation and consumer joined President Roosevelt on the new national defense commission. They met to survey work done plan tasks and speed mobilization as defense spending nears 4 000 000 000.
Secretary Hull ruled that American citizens may fly U S war planes into the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island to transfer title and cross the border into Canada for subsequent transport to Allied forces. American pilots may then fly the planes not across the Atlantic.
Senator Byrnes announced a senate appropriations subcommittee may set aside 25 to 50 million dollars of relief funds for national defense projects. The plan would use part of 975.65 million relief funds to hire WPA workers on aviation bases and other defense programs. A restriction would likely require project certification by the war and navy secretaries.
Rome reports Fascist Italy feverishly preparing for war as Premier Mussolini aims for action within days. The Manhattan liner begins boarding in Genoa as Italy trains 27 000 volunteers for noncombat roles and 12 000 women for various positions while observers expect a Mediterranean strike potentially south of France.
Farmers are invited to visit soil conservation demonstrations in Douglas and Franklin counties. The group meets at 8 30 tomorrow morning at Forrest Park in Ottawa with transportation provided.
Oklahoma City May 30 The south central jurisdictional conference of the United Methodist church planned to approve a committee recommendation not to elect a new bishop to succeed Charles L Mead of Kansas City. Kansas delegates favored attaching Kansas to the Nebraska conference led by Bishop William C Martin of Omaha. The action aimed at economy and could affect publishing house mergers and jurisdictional boundaries. Dr Paul Quillan of Houston was the likely choice but would take a pay cut.
Memorial day ceremonies in Robinson Park Lawrence featured Rev. Harold G Barr addressing the crowd and floral tributes by G A R Ladies of the G A R Spanish American War Auxiliary American War Mothers Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. The day included flag presents prayers songs and a Gettysburg Address reading. A further service at Memorial Park Cemetery and a large Memorial Day program at South Park followed with Omar B Ketchum of Topeka as speaker.
Harold Hutton and his brother Tom were assaulted by two unknown men and two accompanying women on a south Lawrence country road. Harold suffered head bruises after a rock shattered the windshield and Tom received an arm bruise from a car crank as they drove away. Sheriff and city police hunt the attackers.
Pittsburgh May 30. James Lanagan, director of the student band at North Lafayette Township High school, gave his ensemble a prepared list of suitable numbers for Memorial Day services this year. Last year a request in a cemetery led the boys to perform Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here.
