Allied reserves engage German forces as Auswartens push relocates to Soissons yesterday. German units reportedly captured the major portion of Soissons amid ongoing fighting.
Allied dispatches describe intensified German shelling along the American sector near Toul and near Rheims as German forces press the line. Reports note heavy fighting, German use of tanks and air activity, and Allied counter efforts aided by reserves and French forces.
The University of Kansas Extension Division mobilized state resources to promote pro American war messages. It organized war conferences, community institutes, lantern slides, films, and correspondence courses. Speakers toured towns, stressing thrift, food conservation, and unity to “Win the War” across Kansas.
Only three graduates will emerge from a class of seventeen at Haskell Institute this spring as most classmates have entered military service. One from business and two from industrial depart ments will receive diplomas. Commencement week begins Saturday with alumni activities and a baccalaureate sermon. Judge H J Waters, former Kansas State Agricultural College head and Kansas City Star Mile editor, will deliver the address on Wednesday, June 12 in the institute chapel. Public exhibitions follow with drills by military companies and two performances of Hinowa the play on June 10 11 in the chapel.
The British lines at Bermericourt and along the Chemin-Des-Dames faced a French assault. A British division fought to stem the tide and even counterattacked. Tanks on the flanks doomed the effort. A brigade conducted a rear guard action at Ville-Aux-Bois southeast of Craonne, fighting beside allied forces.
The War Department announces a nationwide plan to train officers in colleges starting September. Institutions with 100 or more students will form military training units under Army officers. Enrollment is voluntary for 18 to 21 year olds, with government equipment provided. Students may remain in college while completing military science work, and active duty would not begin until age 21 unless urgent necessity arises.
Haskell Indian School track team prepares for a big dual meet with Chilocco Oklahoma on Haskell field this Saturday. Chilocco has defeated the University of Oklahoma this season, raising expectations for a hard fought contest. The meet features top runners from both schools and a silver loving cup prize will go to the winner.
The Grand Army of the Republic plans its annual memorial for sailors who died in the war. A river ceremony will follow church services with flower casting for the dead, featuring hymns, poems, and speakers from veterans and patriotic groups.
President wishes observed with a line of march from Grand Army HQ to Christian Church at 2330. A delegation from Washington Post No 12 G A T and veterans will attend a Memorial Day service tonight at the Haskell Institute chapel. The observance honors Indian students with a program arranged by the Haskell committee and Ta tions. Members appointed include Cc 1 Pots Di B pinieuty and S$.H. Houston among others.
Indiana senator Albert J Beveridge urges strong U S action to defend democracy and national interests against Germany while warning that League of Nations style enforcement could curb American sovereignty. He emphasizes avoiding foreign entanglements and stresses continued mobilization, trade protection, and supportive measures for war efforts.
A local band concert is planned for tonight at South Park starting at dusk, featuring the newly organized Music Patr Band. The program includes overtures and marches with titles such as Twilight on the Nile and Down Home Rag, performed by local musicians and guest soloists.
