Local bankers and businessmen report a 50 cent piece shortage in Lawrence and nearby cities. They note minting of new halves continues, but few reach circulation, with a Topeka bank reporting only 200 halves received from the Federal Reserve since January.
Actress Linda Darnell died in a Glenview fire on April 10 and left an estate valued under 10 000 dollars. The will names her adopted daughter Charlotte Marley and guardians Mr and Mrs Richard Lane Curtis for the child.

In Marseilles Illinois a Rock Island Corn Belt Rocket train derailed Friday night, injuring 22 people with eight hospitalized. Ten cars left the tracks in the 4300 population town as authorities Seek the cause.
The Associated Press reports highway deaths on the first day of the Memorial Day weekend reached 74 as motorists flooded streets. Safety officials say it is too early to judge the holiday period trend, with a three-day forecast of 430 to 510 fatalities and a record 431 set last year.
The defunct Atlas missile site at Worden 14 miles southwest of Lawrence will be disposed of by the government along with eight other sites around Topeka. A House subcommittee approved Air Force plans for surplus disposal under GSA procedures with an investment total of 856.9 million. The nine Atlas and Titan complexes, including 113 missile launching sites, are being decommissioned due to obsolescence. The ring around Forbes Base is valued at 47 million, including 230 acres. Worden site cost about 13 million to build and equip.
Seattle AP report says the University of Washington will enforce the state 21 age limit on cigarette sales on campus. The policy follows Daily urging and editorial praise for swift action. The law cited was passed in 1895.
Government officials cautioned little chance of survivors after the Bhori colliery explosion in eastern India killed an estimated 250 to 400 miners. Fire and gas forced rescue teams back as officials considered sealing the mine.

Dr. Franklin D. Murphy former Kansas University chancellor and UCLA head briefly joined a Riverside picket line during a California Regents meeting. About 50 students demonstrated for greater autonomy as Berkeley dominance faced opposition from other state schools. Murphy and two administrators borrowed signs then spoke before the Regents.
Dick Keene, 75, of 1637 Barker Ave., died Friday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a pancreas condition. Co owner of the Haynes Keene Shoe Store from 1915 to 1958, the oldest shoe store of its type in Lawrence. Survived by wife Helen, two sons Kenneth and Wallace, siblings and four grandchildren. Funeral Monday at Rumsey Funeral Home with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial Fund favored for a nursing scholarship.
Kansas University opens final examinations at 7:30 am with senior grades due Friday. Baccalaureate and Commencement set for Memorial Stadium on June 6 and 7. English final exams and some aerospace tests held Friday. Also notes a large post-graduation party in Lawrence and Time Magazine’s feature on Hallmark family leadership tied to KU gifts.
