Washington May 29 Four top government officials received notice from the house military committee to appear before it Tuesday to explain their opposition to the Smith Connally labor bill. The four are Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox Secretary of Labor Perkins Emory Land and John J McCloy. They had signed a letter to Speaker Rayburn opposing the measure which the committee had approved 21 to 0.
Paul Erdman files for divorce from Marjorie Elizabeth Erdman in district court. He asks custody of their two minor children. They were married July 7, 1935.
A marriage license was issued today to Robert Wayne Adkisson aged 18 of Lawrence and Lilletta Bruner aged 17 of Pacoma Oklahoma.

Washington reports say Admiral William H. Standley may resign from his post as ambassador to the Soviet Union. Secretary Hull denied knowledge of any such intention while Times dispatches quoted sources claiming Standley pressed for resignation amid dissatisfaction with conditions of his mission.
Gen Henri Giraud placed his Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor on Gen Dwight D. Eisenhower and Eisenhower said he would wear no decoration until France is free. Giraud spoke at the ceremony in Algiers before allied regiments as Eisenhower thanked him and pledged to emulate the custom. Metz, Giraud’s birthplace, figures in his long term aim to lead liberation into Lorraine city.
Louis Bia a 40 year old steam fitter with Cory Joslin MacN sons died when a nine inch steam pipeline fell on his head at seven twenty five this morning. He left a wife Mrs Fannie Bia and one child and lived at 818 Tennessee street. He began work at Sunflower on March 18 1943 and previously lived in Radley before moving to Lawrence. The body was sent to an Olathe mortuary. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
About 350 high school youths from 60 Kansas cities gather in Wichita for the seventh Sunflower Boys State session. State American Legion commander Beryl Johnson will speak at Sunday ceremonies. The event includes a Sunday opening, a Monday primary, Tuesday general election, and a Wednesday legislature reconvenes for the week long encampment.

Probate Judge Frank R. Gray received a handsome briefcase as a gift in his Topeka office today, awarded at the Kansas Probate Judges association annual meeting where he served as retiring president. He was toastmaster at a banquet featuring Prof. John Ise of the University of Kansas. Officers for the coming year were elected: Elmer Anderson president and Sam Parisa vice president and treasurer.
Arthur Mee, 67, editor of the Children’s Encyclopedia and author of The Book of Knowledge in its American edition, died in London. Mee created the best seller in 1908 after his wife urged him to write a book for their six year old daughter. He also wrote The Children's Bible and The Children's Shakespeare and several war related works.
Willmer Kidd of Neodesha Kansas among 12 enlisted men awarded the Air Medal by Lt Gen George C Kenney for their roles as gunners on an Army attack plane in the Huon Gulf New Guinea raid on Japanese cargo ships and destroyers in March.

Dr. H. L. Chambers announced a new government funded plan to cover hospitalization costs for service men's wives at childbirth or for ill children. Independence Kansas May 29 Harry H Woodring blames Sen Clyde Reed for the Verdigris river flood saying a 1937 protest blocked a 30 000 000 flood control project by the US Army engineers He argues the flood caused loss of homes food and ten years of fertility and that Congress was ready to act before Reed's objection.
Washington reports Representative Albert J. Engel estimates the national debt will reach 300 billion dollars. He says Kansas would bear about 4.1 billion in total cost and that the state's share equals about 139 percent of Kansas' assessed valuation of 2.944 billion dollars, as stated in the Congressional Record.

Washington May 29 The United Mine Workers policy committee met briefly and adjourned without taking action to extend the truce in the coal industry which expires Monday midnight. The committee remains in Washington and can be reconvened on short notice. Miners and operators are ordered by the war labor board to continue production with no interruption while wage disputes are settled, but UMW leaders have not acknowledged the board's orders. Portal to portal pay talks in soft coal mines lasted two hours with no apparent success and were to resume in mid afternoon.
Topeka notes continuing warm weather with thundershowers starting in the extreme west today and spreading across the state by tonight. Rain welcomed by western farmers but not in the east where fields await. Weatherman S D Flora says temperatures reach midsummer levels and may cool western areas tonight.
