British desert fighting planes and American built Kittyhawks helped repulse a German panzer column pushing toward Sidi Rezegh and Tobruk. Front line reports described tank battles along a 50 mile belt with Axis forces threatening Tobruk while RaF planes gained air superiority as American bombers struck supply trucks.
British radio reports Heydrich died in Prague though unconfirmed. Six executed in Prague in retaliation as Nazi rulers vow vengeance. Stockholm reports Norwegians may have killed Himmler’s agent on Sotra with widespread German reprisals. Darre warns of grain deficits and halved rations.
Naval experts say despite heavy losses by Nazi submarines the United States is slowly winning the main Atlantic campaign. They urge increased production of war and merchant ships and more defensive craft to secure supply lines to Britain and allies. The record shows three convoys reached the British Isles without loss, while 221 merchant ships were sunk on the American side since mid January and destroyers Jacob Jones Sturtevant and Blakeley faced torpedo or mine damage.
President Roosevelt said the government is studying whether to educate men rejected for military service due to low intelligence ratings. He discussed the issue with Maj. Gen. Hershey and John W. Studebaker and suggested manual or vocational training to sharpen wits and consider nutrition as a factor in development. He has not decided on conscription for 18 and 19 year olds.

In Flagstaff Arizona May 29 the U S department of labor sent Earl Ruddy to aid negotiations over a three day retail strike tied to union organizing among restaurant and buffet workers. Dr John R Steelman ordered the move at C P Flynn Arizona federation request as seven member labor council teams with merchants to seek a settlement. The town of 7500 suffers stalled business and shrinking food supplies amid the dispute.
Washington May 29. A joint conference committee failed to settle senate and house differences in the military pay adjustment bill. Chairman Reynolds said it might be some time before another session. Reynolds supported raising minimum pay from 21 to 50 dollars a month, while three senate conferees would not yield from 42 dollars. The house sent the bill back to conference with orders to stand by 50, after prior agreement on 42.
Governor Payne Ratner addressed Liberty Memorial high school graduates at the 68th annual commencement in Hoch auditorium, KU. He urged lifelong education as a weapon of combat, defending Americanism, democracy, and duty, and warned that freedom requires active citizen participation and careful voting.
Topeka May 29 Senator Clyde Reed of Parsons says the war production board will amend its lumber rules to allow sale of timber for constructing or repairing grain storage structures. He sees this as a sign more storage space may be available for the 1942 Kansas wheat crop, with 75 to 100 million bushels possibly stored outside. Instructions on how to obtain lumber are expected soon.
The Lawrence Ministerial Alliance plans Sunday night Union Park services starting June 7 led by Alfred P. Smith and four ministers including O E Allison Astman and Barr. Trinity Lutheran chimes play ten minutes before the 8 p.m. services and music will be arranged by the pastors. Community support is urged for summer Southpark gatherings.

Weatherman S D Flora cautions no major break in the heat, with showers likely in eastern Kansas Saturday morning and northwest regions late today. Lawrence merchants are required to file ceiling prices with the local rationing office. The ceiling price is the highest amount at which an article sold in March 1942. As of now no prices have been filed and a telegram directs the office to receive and file local price lists promptly.

Alumni enthusiasm remains high as the University of Kansas readies its seventieth commencement on Mt Oread.
