Coroner rules 18 year old’s drowning accidental at lake

The coroner concluded that Cameron Kirchner 18 of Gardner drowned accidentally at Douglas State Fishing Lake after a boat overturned on February 18. Kirchner did not survive while a 17 year old companion survived. Autopsy notes indicate the teens fished at night and used a family boat to travel to a neighboring camp. News investigations describe the event and surrounding details from the incident.

The piece, part of Up from Ashes, pays homage to Lawrence's early history and its resilience after William Quantrill's 1863 raid. Andrea Repinsky also appears as a monarch caterpillar along the parade route.

Lawrence War Draft Push Spurs Early June 5 Registration

In May 1917 Lawrence communities prepared for national mobilization after National Guard units were ordered to recruit to war strength. President Wilson set June 5 as universal draft registration day for men 21 to 31 under the Selective Service Act, with Lawrence declaring it a holiday and planning a patriotic meeting. KU envisaged many seniors leaving school for conscription, while commencement plans faced potential shifts to accommodate travel for registration.
