Report of a French steamer stranded at St Naw near La Ch Tanded. Officials say the ship was not torpedoed and the stranding was an accident. Company representatives express confidence in vessel safety and crews’ welfare. Also notes Kansas City visits by Ben and Mrs Goyer and Dr Eugene T McWarland’s day in Kansas City.
Miss Kanaga, a noted accompanist and pupil of Mrs A J Anderson, gave a brilliant recital in Lawrence. Her Beethoven Sonata and Chopin selections featured expressive phrasing and strong climaxes, with accolades from the audience and an encore for the Liszt Hungarian Fantasy. Richard Millon of Denver praised her singing voice.
Dalce Norwood McCormick hosted a dance in Eckes hall with intermission music by a colored quartet and refreshments. Eric J Owens and Swede Wilson provided dance music. A string of postponements due to weather followed church and campus events.
Mrs A L Salix returned yesterday from the Swedish hospital War City after gall stone surgery and is recovering. Av Monroe returned home from Kansas City where he was under medical care. John Merwin has been ill with typhoid at his West Lawrence home for two weeks. Mars N F Gailey of Kansas City spent a few hours in Lawrence en route to Balin. T Decker left today for a visit in Washington and will return soon. Mrs Seth Bailey of Chanute visiting daughter at the University Jesius. Mrs By Camel and daughter Suede of Garden City were in Lawrence en route to Bald.
Miss Elizabeth Bernherd of Kansas City is spending a few days in Ottawa to attend the commencement exercises.
Men work around the clock to guard weak spots and repair leaks as high water rumors spread. Trustee A Hicks says the levees are in good shape and could withstand five more feet, with Brine levee leak repaired and patrols ongoing to prevent breaks. Some damage expected from Mud Creek and river lowlands.
Water pours into Lake View from Baldwin's branch and Sweezer's creek with a stream eight feet wide and tile-flow pressure at the east end. A new pumping plant intended to keep the lake supplied is now nearly completed and ready to restore steady water flow.
A Decoration Day event at Barteldes Seed Co involves Aesp Balty stamping at Mrs Walther's Arts and Crafts Store located at 838 1 2 Mass St. The scene centers on a crafts display and participation by local residents during the public observance.
