More Kansans seek sway in Statehouse politics
The Kansas Legislature sees a shift toward contract lobbyists who handle many clients. About 570 lobbyists remain, but the number of associations and clients has doubled to 1,218 since 1975. Experts note a growing corps of 15 to 20 contract lobbyists and broader legislative involvement by companies.

Lobbyists Growth and Influence in Kansas Legislature
The growth of contract lobbyists in Kansas raises access and influence concerns. Lobbyists claim to simplify reform passage and provide insider Capitol knowledge, while critics say they create a paid middleman between citizens and lawmakers. Bud Burke and Rep. Miller warn of rising costs, dependence, and risk to democratic process as budget and issues expand since 1975.

Little giants keep shoppers in city limits
Rural economist David Darling analyzed tax receipts from Kansas towns under 5,000 to measure a trade pull factor. Fourteen of 65 towns posted a factor above 1.0, with Elwood leading at 1.85 due to a nearby hardware superstore attracting customers from across the Missouri River. Paola Norton Sabetha and others also scored above 1.0 while larger cities like Concordia Independence and Abilene showed strong pull factors.
