Independent editor Herbert Meyer Jr dies at 58 in Independence
Herbert A. Meyer Jr. editor and publisher of the Independence Daily Reporter died of a heart attack in a local hospital after a kidney disorder. A KU 1936 graduate and former Kansas Editor of the Year, he led the Reporter since 1950 and held posts with the William Allen White Foundation and Kansas journalism groups. Funeral services are set for 3 p.m. Saturday at the Episcopal Church in Independence.

Injured Cyclist Fractures Rib in U.S. 40 Collision
Lawrence M. Allison, 80, of 632 N. Seventh, suffered a fractured rib and punctured lung when his bicycle collided with a car on U.S. 40 near the north city limits. He is in fairly good condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Allison said he waited for a traffic break before crossing, disputing earlier signals. The driver, Terry R. Hicks, 25, of 1128 Conn., reported the incident to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.
