May 27 Washington The Fourth Assistant Mostmaster General Blakeslee told the Senate committee the amendment to the postal bill was a surrender to the railroads and attacked lawmakers for bowing to railroad interests He defended his own actions and alleged the committee sought changes to rural delivery and mail-carrier compensation while denying the railroads a side service provision He faced questions from Senator Martine who pressed him on whether his charges reflected policy or personal grievance and he cited work with postal officials and prior positions to justify the stand.

Tag Day Money Report for Humane Society

A partial report from a Scout tag day shows about 14 dollars collected to be turned over to the Humane Society. Secretary Boltz notes the scout leader has been slow in submitting reports and only one ward elm tree count has been received. In the first ward, the elm tree tally stands at three. Memorial Day Services Planned in Lawrence Observances in City

Memorial Sunday arrangements have been set with parade routes, cemetery ceremonies, and a 2:50 pm program at First Methodist Church. General Wilder S Metcalf will marshal and Judge Smart will deliver the memorial address. Patriotic societies and local companies will participate, with processions starting from Oak Way and Lindley’s store and ending at Mt. Olivet and Franklin cemeteries.

Motor Car Thefts Alarm Lawrence Owners

Auto owners in Lawrence report multiple thefts of new cars including a Buick owned by J. B. Newhouse from near Turner Hall last night around 10. police were alerted and warnings went to nearby towns, with no trace found yet. Earlier two weeks earlier a new Ford owned by A. I. Wickersham was stolen and not recovered. A Chevrolet belonging to W. O. Hamilton was also taken and later found abandoned. police suspect an organized ring and possible outside town involvement.

Waite Found Guilty In Father In Law Murder Trial

Dr Arthur Warren Waite was found guilty of murder in Grand Rapids Michigan in the case against him for the death of his father in law. The jury returned the verdict after a brief deliberation and Waite was remanded for sentencing on January 1. The New York trial summary notes the judge finished the charge by 1 20 pm and the jury began deliberations. Edwin Schrader has returned from Kansas City with his wife Mrs Schrader undergoing a Swedish hospital operation and is recovering.

Rainfall in Valley May Raise River Despite Light River Rise

Rain from the Kaw watershed last night will lift the river only modestly today but raises concern for bridge work near Lawrence. Engineer Ray Pilkin says a slight rise is expected, with union pacific crews watching for higher waters as rainfall totals from Topeka to Hutchinson reach over an inch in many areas. Kansas reports include Topeka 1.3 inches, Hutchinson 1.5 inches, Kansas City area and Sedalia seeing heavy showers, with hail and wind in spots.

Tornado Hits Pittsburg Kansas Damages City

A tornado tore through western Pittsburg damaging stores and outbuildings, uprooting trees, shattering glass, and blowing debris across Main Street. Two men in a grocery shop were saved when a refrigerator protected them as wreckage collapsed nearby. The storm crossed toward the east, with an ice house preventing further collapse.

Roosevelt Campaign HQ Opens in Chicago Ahead of Convention

Campaign headquarters for Theodore Roosevelt’s Republican presidential bid will open in Chicago next week. Herbert L. Satterjee and Lawrence Graham arrived to arrange the launch and said an active campaign will target delegates. Some believe Roosevelt may attend the convention. Pennsylvanian United Republicans plan their own June 1 HQ for Gov. Brumbaugh. A Chicago band of 100 pieces will provide convention music.

Two Die In College Fire At Penn College

Oskaloosa Iowa May 27 Two people died and two suspects were reported gravely injured as a blaze swept the main building of Penn College at four o clock this afternoon causing estimated damage of eighty thousand to one hundred thousand dollars. State officials and college administrators confirmed the tragedy and described the emergency response. Rural schools under county supervision closed for recall until next year while the county superintendent hopes to reopen with more rural campuses meeting state standardization rules.
