Americans donated 174.52 billion to charities in 1998, up 10.7 percent from 1997, the Giving Trust reports. Inflation adjusted rise was 9 percent. Individual gifts rose 9.7 percent, foundations 22.9 percent, and corporate gifts 9.3 percent.

Los Angeles City Attorney James Hahn announced coordinated lawsuits filed in state courts by six California cities and two counties against major handgun manufacturers including Colt Smith & Wesson Glock and Beretta and industry groups. The suits seek injunctions against marketing practices and penalties up to 2500 dollars per gun linked to illegal marketing, potentially totaling millions, with defendants including the American Shooting Sports Council and others. Sacramento Berkeley San Mateo County and Alameda County joined San Francisco in the actions as Compton and West Hollywood also joined Los Angeles.
