Supreme Court strengthens prosecution of public corruption extortion

The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 ruling, allows a public official to be convicted of extortion under the Hobbs Act without showing the official solicited the payoff. Prosecution must prove the official received a payment they were not entitled to, knowing it was in exchange for official acts. The decision upheld John Evans Jr.’s $8,000 payoff in DeKalb County, Ga. case. The court also taxed back pay from federal lawsuits, will examine sentencing for perjury, and upheld campaign literature bans within 100 feet of polls.
