Droughts in Kansas May Worsen, USGS Warns
A USGS study warns future Kansas droughts could exceed 1930s and 1950s deficits. Despite near normal rainfall in 2000 2006, river flows at gauges on the Republican Saline Solomon and Smoky Hill rivers fell to record lows, raising concerns for cities like Salina dependent on Smoky Hill wells. The rise of thousands of lakes traps runoff, reducing river return and prompting calls to revise water plans.
