KU student charged in sex case with 16-year-old in Lawrence
A University of Kansas student, Connor Z. Claxton, 23, faced a preliminary hearing in Douglas County on charges including criminal sodomy with a girl between 14 and 16, plus drug offenses. The alleged offenses occurred in September 2017 after Claxton lured the girl from El Dorado to meet him via Snapchat. The victim testified Claxton paid for gas, offered marijuana, and engaged in sexual activity before she left, later leading to his arrest and a Sept. 26 trial date.

The defeat of a 0.5 cent sales tax proposal leaves a $44 million jail expansion and $11 million behavioral health campus unfunded while Justice Matters and Kansas Appleseed urge a May 30 public forum. Leaders call for a separate ballot question on a mental health campus funded by diverse sources and state grants. The commission plans 7 p.m. at Building 21 to hear residents amid overcrowding and ineffective in-county programs.
