Crayons Tested for Asbestos Contamination Reported
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer says two government certified labs found asbestos in crayons from Crayola, Prang, and Rose Art. Of 40 crayons tested from the three brands, 32 showed contamination above trace levels. Officials say no illnesses are known and further study is needed to assess risk.

Kennedy harassment case halts push for deputy inspector general post
The Army has not finished investigating Lt Gen Claudia Kennedy’s harassment complaint against Maj Gen Joseph Inge. The internal note named Inge as deputy inspector general, reversing an earlier plan to elevate Maj Gen Larry Smith, who Kennedy accused in 1996. No public announcement was issued.

Repairs Loom Over Eisenhower Building Among Top Federal Needs
A GAO report cites 903 federal buildings needing about 4 billion dollars in repairs and renovations. Sixteen of the 44 most costly projects are in the Washington area including the Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building, Agriculture South Building, and Commerce Department in D.C. as well as the Justice Department site. The Federal Buildings Fund financed nearly 580 million annually through 1999, but by end of fiscal 1999 the backlog remained at about 4 billion. Major systems such as electrical plumbing and HVAC drive the costs.
