Children's Author DeJong Admits Lack of Qualifications
GRAND RAPIDS AP Meindert DeJong a noted children's author says he lacks adult writing qualifications and has never read many children's books. He spoke at Aquinas College after moving from the Netherlands as a child and earning a Calvin College English degree. DeJong has won several awards including Hans Christian Andersen and Newbery medals and recently the Regina Medal. He says he began writing by chance after a librarian encouraged him during a library story. He defends writing for all children as every child is special.
