Vatican City May 23 AP Pope Pius XI denounces the modern economic world as a dictatorship and calls for a return to the justice of God in capital and labor relations. The 20000 word Quadragesimo Anno condemns socialism and communism and warns against corporative states concentrating power and bureaucratic control.
William C. Wood of the U S postal service outlined the importance of proper postage classification to postmasters at the Kansas Oklahoma Missouri tri state biennial meeting. Officer elections were planned for this afternoon and evening entertainment features were listed. In Emporia Rice Brown and Richard Barnes were elected co captains of the College of Emporia basketball team. St John Clarke, designer of the first city subway, died in New York aged 83.
Rouen opens a nine day program marking the 500th anniversary of Joan of Arc’s trial, burning, and death. The city decorates streets with silver masts laurel wreaths tapestries and coats of arms while the mayor rekindles a remembrance flame and a grand arch welcomes a procession titled The Apotheosis of Joan of Arc featuring a Rouen girl reenacting Joan’s entry into the city.
Two youths Louis Kish and Adam Morgan confess to a Pontiac bank robbery worth $12000. They fled by stolen airplane to Ontario and Detroit, later landing near Chatham. They were captured in Toronto with most of the stolen money recovered.
University of Kansas officials warn against further liquor use by students and vow vigorous action on any new honor cases. Letters were sent to organized house presidents calling a meeting of fraternity leaders, with Chancellor Lindley seeking cooperation in enforcing conduct rules. Interviews were not allowed to reveal details of the discussion.
A sophomore girl and six senior boys reach the national oratorical contest finals in Washington at Continental Hall. The winner will tour Europe for ten weeks after July 15, with results based on section eliminations. London May 23 AP The international wheat conference closed endorsing an information clearinghouse to collect and distribute accurate wheat figures and an agenda for a future meeting. Countries would appoint members to a continuing committee to run the bureau and push acreage reductions though no specific methods were set. The American delegation hailed the results as a step toward orderly marketing and a reduction in overproduction led by the US.
President Hoover broadcast from his Rapidan camp cabin to eulogize American war dead as part of Cornell University war memorial dedication. He said memorials honor courage, devotion, and sacrifice, not glorify war or hatreds, and that the country should remember those who gave their lives for their fellows and country.
Haskell Indians beat Chilocco Indians 6 to 1 on the focal field in an afternoon game. Perry started for Chilocco and Tineyuyah pitched for Haskell, each allowing six hits as Haskell hitters produced the decisive runs. Final score by innings shows Haskell with a strong third inning and solid defense.
Six high school bands from Marion Indiana Senn Chicago Angora NL Joliet Macon City Iowa and Harrison Tech Chicago qualified for the national Class A finals in Tulsa Oklahoma tonight after 14 bands performed in yesterday’s prelims. Judges announced the six finalists.
Chicago May 23 AP declines of half a dollar on all grades of livestock this week push cattle to 7.30 per hundredweight the 1911 and 1914 prewar levels. Hog prices slipped with yesterday’s top only five cents above May 1915, while the week’s average hog price stood 49 cents below last week. Stockmen say broad commodity declines are pulling livestock toward 1913 prewar levels as cattle and hogs respond to market pressures.
The first section of Lawrence’s new million gallon water reservoir at Twelfth and Oread streets nears completion. A seventy foot diameter tank rising thirty five feet will be built by Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Co at a cost of $40,000. Weather slowed progress but riveters use air hammers to secure rivets as work progresses toward the five seven foot high sections planned above ground.
Oread High will graduate its largest senior class of twenty four at 8 o clock Monday evening June 1 in Fraser theater with Dean Raymond A Schwegler of the University of Kansas school of education as speaker. The senior class banquet is Tuesday at 6 30 at the Hotel Wood. At 11 40 Wednesday morning wards and honors will be presented at the senior assembly.
Esther Clark Hill of Chanute will be honored Wednesday evening in a radio program on KFKU at 6 o clock. The event features her poem Small Place, inspired by Chanute home funded by Kansas club women. The work is set to music by Rachel Von Valkenberg and sung by Mrs. Henry Werner with readings by Mrs. Allen Crafton. Mrs. Roy Underwood will perform as contralto, offering several numbers.
Tony Sarg's Marionettes will appear as an extra attraction of the University of Kansas concert course in Lawrence on February 18 next year announced by the fine arts office. The show has drawn large audiences on prior visits and will present The Rose and the Ring, a satirical fairy story by William Makepeace Thackeray with a matinee for school children likely.
In Lincoln Nebraska's Cornhuskers beat Kansas 9 to 7 to complete a sweep in the series. Nebraska connected for eleven hits while Kansas had seven. The Huskers improved to 2-0 in the set as pitchers Ross Trombold Getgen and Williams contributed, while Kansas' lineup featured Wakefield and Wondmaa among others.
In Lincoln the Big Six track meet ended with Kansas leading overall. Bernard Gridley of Kansas tied the world 220 yard low hurdles record in 23 seconds. Glen Dawson of Oklahoma set a new conference mile record at 4 minutes 22 seconds and won the two mile as well. George Jones won the quarter and Joe Klaner the 100 yard dash. Wisconsin won the Western Conference outdoor meet with 46 points, Illinois second, Michigan third.
New York May 23 AP Dollars seeking investment face scarce productive outlets as banks cut thrift deposit rates to 2 percent. A New York bank president says deposits are plentiful but banks turn away large funds daily to avoid idle money. Call money on the stock exchange runs around 1 percent and state and government securities yield barely more than 3 percent.
Douglas county 4 H club members announced for the Manhattan round up with seventeen girls and fourteen boys on the list and three more boys to be chosen later to ensure equal numbers. Adult leader Mrs D S Perkins and agents Miss Christie Hepler and J A Terrell will attend.
In Cincinnati on May 28 St. Louis beat the Reds 2 to 1 in ten innings. Runs came on two errors after Red Lucas held St Louis to four hits. Pirates beat Cubs 4 to 3 as Matone and Meine spun tight pitching. Phillies sweep doubleheader over Brooklyn 8 to 5 and 7 to 1 with Arlett homering. Athletics win 7 to 1 over Boston as Earnshaw allows four hits. Yankees top Washington 7 to 6 after a five-run fifth. Indians end 12-game skid by beating Chicago 10 to 1. Multiple games noted with line scores and key plays.
War veterans in Lawrence plan to attend a Memorial Day service at Plymouth Congregational Church at 11 tomorrow. Rev Alfred D Grey will deliver Safe ty First as the sermon, with allied orders and veterans of later wars expected. Members of Washington Post No 12 to meet at the courthouse at 10 30 and march to the church, joined by American Legion Dorsey Liberty post members and other ex service men.
Officers of the Chamber of Commerce urge all rural regiments to attend next Tuesday noon at the Hotel Eldridge for a dinner meeting where Ralph Snyder, president of the Kansas State Farm Bureau and leader of Midwest farm groups, will discuss How Business Can Help Agriculture. The program will cover agricultural improvement efforts and the chamber’s development plan for agriculture.
United States army air armada leaves Long Island fields and flies to Connecticut rendezvous then down the Hudson to repel a mythical attack on New York City. Roosevelt Field bombers started at 3 26 p.m., followed by Mitchel Field groups. Takeoff cited as the air division's best yet with three planes every ten seconds.
Indianapolis May 23 AP The oil burning motor car entered by Clessie Cummins of Columbus Indiana driven by Dave Fivans was the first car to qualify today for the annual 500 mile race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It ran the ten mile qualifying lap at an average speed of 96.871 mph.
