Opel rocket car demo at Avus speeds to 100 mph

Berlin May 23 AP The Opel rocket car powered by rear rockets was demonstrated at Avus Speedway, reaching about 100 miles per hour with Fritz Von Opel driving. The vehicle roared off with flames and smoke as successive rockets fired, aiming to explore high speed travel and future long distance flight theories. Von Opel said the rocket system could help reach Europe to America quickly and even encircle the earth in a day, noting oxygen limits in high altitude flight and planning further trials next month on a straight railway stretch. German experts see strong development potential but expect no immediate impact on conventional motor vehicles. Previous tests at Ruesselsheim saw driverless speeds around 430 mph for a few seconds.
